Sorry this is probably the wrong category

You’ve probably heard that Cardinal Pell has won permission to appeal but it won’t happen for months. In the meantime Christmas cards or letters of encouragement can be sent to:
Cardinal George Pell,
Melbourne Assessment Prison, 317 Spencer Street, West Melbourne, Victoria 3003, Australia

‘I was in prison and you visited me’.

That is a common abbreviation. The X represents the Greek letter chi, as seen in the chi-rho (below). We sometimes also see Xtian for Christian.

They (the prison system) allow him to be called Cardinal? Is there no other number for his prison ? Just wondering how you might have gotten this address? Thanks for any extra information appreciated.

They don’t allow titles in our prisons in usa–unless that depends on what state you are in –

I don’t know what the rule is I’m Australia, but I imagine if one were to write a letter addressed to “Cardinal George Pell” it will get to him regardless.

Edit: maybe I’m wrong, though. The Lifesite article says the prison does not accept mail addressed “His Eminence”, so I don’t know if they’d accept “Cardinal” either.

From the article:-
"You must address him as George Pell on the envelope, but in your letter “His Eminence” will be accepted by the authorities. "

I guess addressing him as George Cardinal Pell wouldn’t work…

mmm, … maybe … don’t think the secular world understands our clergy address system. Personally, I’d abide by the secular laws (though I’d refrain from adding a Mr at the start of the address on the envelope) and address the envelope accordingly.

But I’d like to address my letter as Most Revererend Eminence (not saying that’s what anyone else should do).

And out of concern that he actually did get my letter of support (which to me is the important matter here rather than thumbing my nose at the authorities over salutation etiquette), I’d probably give in and just address him as “Your Eminence.”

I just addressed him as Dear Cardinal Pell. He’d not have minded. He’s Australian and we’re pretty down-to-earth. I didn’t give a return address, as there was some legal fuss over a private letter that was put online where he identified with the sufferings of Christ. Anyway, I just wanted him to know, and told him I’d asked our Australian Saint , a relative, to pray for him, and for all victims on both sides of the coin in this world. I’ve cried and prayed, and was glad of the opportunity to assure him of prayers. I worded it carefully in case of possible/probable censorship.
Thanks, Frankie

What the haters don’t realise, apart from reasonable doubt, is that he has already lost so incredibly much.
And if reasonable doubt, acknowledged by one of the three appeal court judges, is ignored in the last appeal, he might end up suffering a loss that is beyond anything, the loss of his priestly right to say Mass. I believe that would pierce his soul.

😮 Wow Trishie, I love my connections in the Australian Catholic scene, but you’ve trumped me with yours! How special. ❤️

No this is a really good point. I forwarded the information from a friend but then spotted after I sent it to other friends that the envelope should read George Pell. Inside we are allowed however to call him Your Eminence. Sorry I didn’t edit it here but thanks for the alert

Thank you to everyone who will send Cdl Pell a Christmas card.

I read that he was overwhelmed with the cards he had received when he was first imprisoned and of course couldn’t say thank you personally for all of them but the great news is that cards are reaching him!

I’ll be happy to send him a card.

Also, this isn’t the place to discuss his guilt or innocence. We are asked to visit those in prison as a work of mercy. It matters not whether they are guilty or innocent of their crime or what happens with their legal process.

If falsely accused and convicted, Cardinal Pell’s greatest grief would be the harm done to the Church, to the members of the Church, to the Catholic Church to the judgement of the world. It might seem to him that his entire life given to God has been betrayed, and the good he has tried to do, negated.

Stripped of reputation, of status, going through the extended anguish of court, does give Cardinal Pell an unlooked calvary, that can ultimately result in holiness if lived in charity, humility, and prayer. There are innocents who can attain sanctity, but also many sinners. God alone truly knows which he is, which we are.
Thank you this is lovely 💐💐💐

This is a great point! I was on the fence but now I think I will send him something.

Thank you for sharing! I might could write him, in fact I think I will.
