I believe it’s year C, but during mass they read readings from A, while everything else was from C.

Can anyone help me understand how this works?

Thanks in advance

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord has its own readings.

Your pastor could have chosen these readings in any year:
Is 42:1-4, 6-7/Acts 10:34-38/Lk 3:15-16, 21-22

or, in Year C, these readings:
Is 40:1-5, 9-11/Ti 2:11-14; 3:4-7/Lk 3:15-16, 21-22

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (and the other feasts of the Lord) have two sets of readings for each year.

In the first edition of the Lectionary, issued in 1969, each of the feasts of the Lord have the same first (Old Testament) and second (New Testament) reading every year, but the Gospel is taken from Matthew, Mark, or Luke, depending on whether the year is A, B, or C.

In the second edition, issued in 1981, a complete set of readings is provided for each year, A, B, and C. But the selection of readings from the first edition is still an option.

To complicate matters further, anytime RCIA is involved (I believe anytime, but always during Lent), there’s the option to use Year A instead of the current calendar.

In the book Ordo, published by the diocese, there can be up to 3 different Masses a priest can celebrate on a weekday. (4 if there is a requiem Mass.) There could be a celebration of a saint, a martyr or ordinary time so liturgical colours could be white, red or green. For each of these different celebrations there could be different readings.

Some major celebrations as well as Sundays in the Church have only one set of readings regardless of which year (A-C) it is and some have alternatives (A-C).
