I was just curious when a priest is allowed to wear yellow or gold vestments. I follow several Catholic pages on social media, and have seen this color from time to time-- most recently a parish had a blessing of the vehicles (never heard of such a practice before) and the priest was wearing gold.

Any thoughts?

From the General Instruction on the Roman Missal:
  1. As regards the color of sacred vestments, traditional usage should be observed, namely:
h) The colors gold or silver may be worn on more solemn occasions in the Dioceses of the United States of America.

From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 346:

“g) On more solemn days, festive, that is, more precious, sacred vestments may be used even if not the colour of the day.

Moreover, Conferences of Bishops may determine and propose to the Apostolic See adaptations regarding liturgical colours that correspond to the needs and culture of peoples.”

While gold and silver are allowed for more solemn and festive days, yellow is a different story. While a non-metallic yellow-gold is sometimes used in vestments as cost-effective replacement for cloth-of-gold, straight yellow in vestments caries a specific significance (or at least it is supposed to). When yellow replaces gold in vestments, it is supposed to represent Pontifical faculties, that is, the wearer celebrates the mass in the stead of the Pope. For example, as our religious order is of Pontifical Rite, the Father General or his appointed representative is allowed to wear white and yellow vestments at the professions and funerals of our priestly and religious brothers (as seen below).

You will never see yellow vestments sold in a store or through a catalog because they require special permissions. They are always custom made.

In England and Wales, vestments that are predominantly gold or silver are permitted when the liturgical colour is white. Blue is also allowed for Masses celebrating Mary. My parish is good at buying new but poor at passing on the old, so we have a huge supply of priestly vestments in various colours. We don’t have any that started life rose, but we have two originally red chasubles that have faded sufficiently to use on Laetare and Gaudete Sundays.

Liturgical colours apply to Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Within reason, a priest can wear what he likes for imparting blessings. When it comes to cars, we have one priest who would do so wearing a gold cope and two others who would just wear a stole over their day clothes.
