Sorry if this is totally off-topic, but y’all are such a bunch of well informed people… 🙂

What is the significance of the yellow, plastic wrist bracelets I have been seeing people were. Today at my work party, I saw a colleague and her spouse wear one. Later, in the paper, I see John Kerry wearing one!!

I now I am often “out of the loop” on this kinda thing, can someone shed some light?

Thanks and God Bless!

I dunno. Could it be related to those ridiculous Yellow Ribbons that are tied all over the place? Didn’t Tony Orlando’s song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree” relate to a prisoner getting out of prison who was unsure if his girlfriend or wife would take him home? And then yellow ribbons were used to show solidarity with the hostages held in Tehran, as I recall. But I don’t think it is flattering to use yellow ribbons to refer to US troops who are in Iraq or Afganistan. (They aren’t exactly prisoners. They are serving our country.)

Okay, I have a right to be cranky on this issue. My husband is in the military. And yellow ribbons rank right up there in my mind with those huge ads at businesses that proclaim “We Support Our Troops”. Oh yeah, how? Just by saying it on a big billboard?!! (And you charge the same prices for your used cars or hamburgers or whatever?) Right, talk is cheap without action!

Okay, I feel much better now. I have never gotten that off my chest!

I think you are seeing the LIVESTRONG bracelets. Lance Armstrong made like 5 million of them and they sold for $1 a piece, the goal was to raise 5 million dollars for cancer. From what I hear they are all sold out and I just saw on EBAY tonight that they are selling for $20. I beleive yellow was the chosen color because it is a strong color and that is the color of the shirt the leader of the Tour De France wears. A friend of ours gave us all one, his dad just died of cancer and he bought alot of them to hand out to others for cancer awareness.

I wear one of those yellow ristbands. If you look closer you’ll find the words “LIVE STRONG” pressed in on the back. Essentially, the money you give goes to a cancer foundation. Plus, I think it’s really cool. Oh, and it really reminds me of living strong with chastity in particular, because that’s my weak spot, honestly.

Haha, I was one to get one of the rarer youth sized ones… the adult sized ones are way too big.

Yep their for the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research. He was aiming to raise 5-6 million but ended up raising closer to 20 so far.

It’s nothing military related, like the ribbons on the oak tree (which I hate too) or politically charged, just a bracelet that raises money for a good cause.

Well, that’s a relief. And I can support that kind of yellow wrist band!
