Yemeni child bride dies of internal bleeding

A 12-year-old Yemeni bride died of internal bleeding following intercourse three days after she was married off to an older man, the United Nations Children’s Fund said.

The girl was married to a man at least twice her age, said Sigrid Kaag, UNICEF regional director for the Middle East and North Africa.

This, from AP, coincidentally appeared a couple of weeks ago:

Some of Yemen’s most influential Islamic leaders, including one the U.S. says mentored Osama bin Laden, have declared supporters of a ban on child brides to be apostates.​

So the question I’d like to address is if very, very young marriages are a cultural thing or an Islamic thing? If **not **an Islamic thing, why would Yemen’s Islamic leaders declare those opposed to “child brides” to be apostate?

beside , nothing in islam determine specific age for marriage , it’s okey as long as the girl attains puberty

It’s probably an Islamic thing because 53 year old Muhammad married Aisha when she was 6 years old, although he didn’t consumate the marriage until she grew up… 9 years old.

Actually we can’t call it **“Islamic thing” **(direct order) nor **“Non-Islamic thing” **(no direct order), the proper expression for such practice is called “Sunnah”, which means following the deeds of Muhammed.
