Many years ago, a little girl named Virginia wrote a letter to a local newspaper asking if Santa Claus really exists. How would you answer this question? (Note: In keeping with this scenario, you have to tell her the answer is yes)
Here’s my answer:
Dearest Virginia, I am sorry to say that Santa Claus, aka Saint Nicholas, died a very long time ago. He lived from 270-343 AD. He was the bishop of Milan and is the patron saint of children everywhere. But, do not dispair, little one. Saint Nicholas’s work can and must continue in all of us. We must continue to guide children everywhere to the Christian faith. That includes you.

Yes, Virginia Santa Claus is real. We call him Santa Claus, or St Nick however is real name is St Nichols. Saints are people who went straight to Heaven as did St. Nichols. His soul is ever present as are the souls of all Saints. He started a tradition of giving to reward children’s good behavior. Today we give in the tradition of St Nichols and to continue to reward good children’s behavior. Some say more gifts are received than people give, some believe St Nichols and other Saints account for these extra gifts. Once you are no longer a child you may understand much more about the process of giving and why people must give. Giving is much more than it appears to you now. For now while you are young please be good and accept the gift given to you. When you are older I will be available if you want to discuss this more.

Santa Claus belongs to childhood;
St. Nicholas models for all of life.

Santa Claus, as we know him, developed to boost Christmas sales—the commercial Christmas message;
St. Nicholas told the story of Christ and peace, goodwill toward all—the hope-filled Christmas message.

Santa Claus encourages consumption;
St. Nicholas encourages compassion.

Santa Claus appears each year to be seen and heard for a short time;
St. Nicholas is part of the communion of saints, surrounding us always with prayer and example.

Santa Claus flies through the air—from the North Pole;
**St. Nicholas walked the earth—caring for those in need.
**
Santa Claus, for some, replaces the Babe of Bethlehem;
St. Nicholas, for all, points to the Babe of Bethlehem.

Santa Claus isn’t bad;
:DSt. Nicholas is just better.

Or another version:
*Santa Claus is round and plump;
St. Nicholas is tall and thin.

Santa Claus wears a stocking cap;
St. Nicholas wears a bishop’s hat.

Santa Claus comes December 25th;
St. Nicholas comes December 6th.

Santa Claus is often seen in stores;
St. Nicholas is often seen in churches.

Santa Claus flies through the air—from the North Pole;
St. Nicholas walked the earth, caring for those in need.

Santa Claus, for some, replaces Jesus at Christmas;
St. Nicholas, for all, points to Jesus at Christmas.

Santa Claus isn’t bad;
St. Nicholas is just better!*
