Yesterdays family discussion: catholicism vs protestantism

Yesterday I went to Paulines and I bought a book: The Catholicism Answerbook - the 300 most frequently questions. When I got home my mother in law and aunt saw and we starting pointing out some faith issues. It went from idols/icons/statues to the saints to some situations of how the Catholic Church made them go away from it and the church worst history events. Some stuff I never heard, like they weren’t allowed touching the bible because it was a sin, only the clergy could, some priest denied child baptism due to their parents life situation, etc… Was this true in many places? Anyway, I tried to respond the best way I know: I told about God demanding Moses build a metal serpent so the people could be save from death, our relation to the saints (devotion not worship), the corrupt people from the middle ages, etc. In the end the whole discussion didn’t produce nothing positive and I realize HOW HARD is to express our faith and ‘‘convert’’ people. I wouldn’t have a problem with the statues and icons argument if the Church didn’t have a clear response about it for 1600 years. The Muslims were the first to have this argument with the Church and we responded with God permitted icons and statues in the Holy of Holies and we don’t confuse the art with God. We permit them because we love who is depicted in the art. It would be no different then having a picture of your loved ones. Clearly Catholics are doing something different than what happened with the Golden Calf.

And people who don’t want to pay attention will usually scatter numerous and unrelated objections in the hope one will stick for a while.
I have wasted lots of energy talking to the wind. People who won’t consider the Church will probably only be reached by someone who isn’t related to them and by the witness of your own life. (My 2 cents)

My prayer for those who have left the church, especially family members, is that someone
enter their lives who will witness to them about the Truth. You may be that someone for
someone’s fallen away relatives!

Oh my and how… Two of my favorites from this month alone. The Pope has a secret army from one relative. And my wife [also converting] was warned by a baptist woman who’d married a catholic that Catholics drink smoke and dance as she learned when she married her catholic husband. My wife simply smiled and agreed and said “Yup they have a lot of fun”…

As an SDA kid I was taught the Catholics and the US Government would join forces to shoot me. My own father, a teacher, explained how they might line us up right out there in the church foyer and shoot us if we didn’t deny our SDA beliefs.

Well here I am swimming the tiber…

For instance teachings on: Trinity & Holy Spirit are yellow, the Eucharist is purple, Purgatory is tan, Mary & the Saints are black, Faith plus (works, and other laws of salvation) are peach, there are more topics…

It is awesome to see all the scriptural backing for our Catholic faith. It moved my heart so much. As I glued each tab in place and underlined the corresponding scripture verse, may faith was affirmed, and deepened. Now when people have questions, I have the answers ready at my fingertips! I have a horrible memmory, so these tabs are an answer to prayer!

Having lived in the South all of my life I have heard a lot of things said about Catholicism.

What I usually hear about the Bible is that Catholics at one time were not allowed to read the Bible and that Bibles were chained in the churches.

Bibles were chained in the churches before the invention of the printing press because they were handwritten and very expensive to make. By having one chained in the church anyone could go in and look at the pictures that were drawn in the Bible. Most people could not read and the pictures helped to explain scripture.
