Does anybody doubt that you can accumulate a huge amount of data consistent with a hypothesis without obtaining any evidence in support of the hypothesis?
Yes, if there are other hypotheses equally supported by that data.
That’s why you look for a datum that would falsify your hypothesis, or something that would be true under one of the competing hypotheses but not the others.
