Sorry about your experience with this priest. He was rude, but his underlying attitude is more troubling. He is there to serve — to serve Christ and to serve parishioners. That includes all parishioners, not just those who do everything they’re supposed to and participate in weekly Mass, but the parishioners who are half-hearted and the parishioners who are mostly-lapsed and the parishioners who pop in only on Easter Sunday. As a priest once told me, priests shouldn’t assume anything about parishioners. For instance, how does he know that a parishioner who “skips Mass” isn’t an agorophobe who struggles just to attend Mass on holidays? How does he know that someone who “pops in” hasn’t set foot in a church for 20 years and is just finding their way back? And maybe, just maybe, parisioners have been attending weekly Mass at another parish because of the priest’s bad attitude (my own Dad did this for years).
