I am looking to get a good conversion story book for my daughter and future son-in-law to read. They are both already catholic but do not have a strong catechesis.

I realize a Catechism or a theological book may be a better way to learn one’s faith but they are often a dry read for a beginner and I feel they may just put the book down. My thought is that the emotional and personal nature of a good conversion story might help hold thier interest, while, teaching them doctrinal issues simulateoulsy.

I want it to be an easy read, something that reads like a story and contains some material argueing catholic doctrine. A good story is critical to this not becoming a book that gets tossed aside.

My initial thought is “Rome Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn. I am wondering if anyone may have read some others and may possibly recommened them over Hahns book.

All recommendations appreciated.

Yes, I think that is a good book for you to get for them. You could also get them Lamb’s Supper-which describes the significance of the Eucharist, or a book called Reasons for Believing, all by Scott Hahn- all GOOD books!

Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic by David B. Currie is one. I’m not sure if it’s any good but it is suggested reading by Catholic Answers (it can be found here).

Surprised by Truth by Patrick Madrid is another. Once again this book is suggested by Catholic Answers (it can be found here). There are an additional 2 volumes to this series that you might want to look at too (they can be found here).

Crossing the Tiber by Stephen Ray is yet another one. This book is also suggested reading by Catholic Answers (it can be found here).

These, I’m sure (I haven’t read any so I can’t vouch for them), are very good reads. You may also be interested in other books that give a strong defense of Catholic beliefs. A very good list of books can be found here on Catholic Answers.

If your daughter and son-in-law, by God’s grace, become active in their faith, I would also suggest getting a good, Catholic commentary on the Scriptures. A few good ones are the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible New Testament (this one is not out yet in one volume, but you can pre-order it), the new Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture series (they are the first for books in the list; as of now, they only have commentaries on Mark, Ephesians, 2 Corinthians, First and Second Timothy and Titus), and also the Navarre Bible (fairly expensive but worth the money if you are thinking about study the Bible seriously and with vigor). I hope this helps!!

PS - The Navarre Bible comes in many different volumes, there are the Pentateuch, Joshua to Kings, Chronicles to Maccabees, The Psalms and the Song of Solomon, Wisdom Books, Major Prophets, Gospels and Acts, The Letters of Saint Paul, and Revelation and Hebrews and Catholic Letters; I believe this covers all of the volumes in the series!

I really like “Rome Sweet Home” 🙂 it’s informative and interesting at the same time…

God bless
