Your penance is to "Say" the following

Greetings Catholic Answers Forum,

I again found myself perusing another thread and have thought to ask this question. I thank you for your patience and kindness in answering my questions. It is truly a blessing to have a place like this to learn about one’s faith.

When a penance is given in the Sacrament of Confession for example “Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Mary’s, and three Glory Be’s” Does this mean to say them aloud or can one say them prayerfully in their heart?

And if one asks the priest if they are to say the penance aloud, then one is bound to say the penance aloud in this case, correct?

It doesn’t matter how you say them, in your mind or out loud.

I suppose if one really was instructed by a priest to say these prayers out loud, then he would have to.

A sister once told me of preparing a First Communion class for their First Confession. She emphasized to the priest that it was their first time and should be a joyful experience.

About half way through one child comes out bawling, " He said … He said…" The priest comes out pleading complete innocence.

She finally got the child quieted down enough to finish his sentence, “He said to say three Hail Marys ----- and I only know one.” Some how she kept a straight face, and told him to just say that one three times.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that:
2701 Vocal prayer is an essential element of the Christian life. To his disciples, drawn by their Master’s silent prayer, Jesus teaches a vocal prayer, the Our Father. He not only prayed aloud the liturgical prayers of the synagogue but, as the Gospels show, he raised his voice to express his personal prayer, from exultant blessing of the Father to the agony of Gesthemani.3

2702 The need to involve the senses in interior prayer corresponds to a requirement of our human nature. We are body and spirit, and we experience the need to translate our feelings externally. We must pray with our whole being to give all power possible to our supplication.

Hence, whoever merely reads the prayer with the eyes, or merely thinks the words of the prayer, would not be doing vocal prayer. Neither would one who does not move the lips, or who moves the lips without activating the vocal cords.
However, even though true vocal prayer must be audible, it is not necessary that anyone but the one praying hear it."

I like your user name as well. I have been wondering does it mean anything? I am not adept at reading nor speaking German.

Yes I picked this username for a reason. Before joining I spent quite a few days browsing the member list trying to see if anything woud stand out. Perhaps one of these days I will share why I chose Anathama Sit as my username. Actually my username was suggested to me by a friend, long story… I would have joined the forums sooner had I thought of a user name earlier.

Thank you for the detailed answer. I shall whisper my prayers as I can hear it. I was writing elsewhere that I did not like to do vocal prayer unless in a Community setting, because I like to maintain silence where I am and get distracted by praying vocally at times.

I never heard a priesst telling a penitent to say his penance aloud. WHen you oleave the confessional, you can say your penance privately. wHAT SINCE DOES IT MAKE TO SAY IT ALOUD? God can still hear you.

I do get prayers as part of my penance when I go to Confession. Usually it is something that practices the virtue opposite of what I am confessing. I have found these penances with prayer seem to work best in my life in combatting the vices that I am constantly confessing.

I do have a question, how do you see penance and Confession?

When I went to confession nearly a month ago, the priest told me to say a certain amount of prayers as my penance. He did not say if I had to say them out loud, etc. I just went to the pew after leaving the confessional and whispered them as I said my penance like others nearby me were doing who had gone to confess before me.

For me I tried whispering my penances in Church and well I have been raised you don’t talk or whisper in Church, so it goes against the grain a bit. I do find if I am required to “say” my penances aloud then I will usually say them at home before my home altar or go for a walk in the park and say them.

If I do not have to “say” my penances aloud, then I find great comfort saying them in the Church after my Confession.

I suppose either practice is okay.

My hunch would be that at least 99 times out of 100 when a confessor says “say three Our Fathers” he means “pray the Our Father three times.”

The churches I have gone to and made confessions were large churches so people were spread out in a different area compared to the section where people sat to go into the confessional/confession room in some form of a lineup. I am sure others whispered their prayers as I didn’t hear anyone recite prayers out loud, and some did theirs silently - personal choices. I prefer to say my prayer penances in the sanctuary before leaving as my missal from my first Holy Communion says to say your penance as soon as you can after you go to Confession.
