Announced in February as the official catechism of World Youth Day. A copy will be included in each “pilgrim backpack”.
Why a Catechism for youth?
The Pope states in this Foreword that many people say that the Catechism does not speak to today’s youth, but he is not in agreement with this opinion. “The youth are not as superficial as they are accused of being; young people want to know what life is really about. A crime novel is compelling because it involves the fate of other people, but it could be our own, this book is compelling because** it speaks to us of our own destiny and therefore is closely related to others and ourselves**,” says the Pope.
Therefore, the Holy Father invites all young people to study the catechism, but he also reminds them that it will not offer them easy solutions. Instead, it demands living a new life and he presents the Gospel as "a precious pearl for which we must give something in return."
Having a thorough knowledge of your faith
“So I ask you: study the catechism with passion and perseverance! Sacrifice your time for it! Study it in the silence of your room, read it with friends, form study groups and networks, exchange ideas on the Internet,” he exhorts them.
Benedict XVI emphasizes the fact that young people should know what they believe, know their faith "with the same precision with which a computer specialist knows the operating system of a computer."
“You must know the faith as a musician knows his instrument and you should be deeply rooted in the faith of your fathers in order to resist the challenges and temptations of our time,” he adds. “You need divine help, so your faith does not dry up like a drop of dew in the sun, so you do not succumb to the temptations of consumerism, so your love is not drowned in pornography, so you do not betray the weak, the victims of abuse and violence.”
What better gift than this to lay the solid foundations of faith, in continuation with the theme of this WYD: “Planted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith”? Complete text: Benedict XVI’s preface to “Youcat”
