My Archdiocesean news paper “The People of God” will be distributed this weekend. I was privy to a particular article that will be included in this issue. This article was written by a DRE at a parish in town known for its liberalism albeit great charitable work who is also herself known to many as holding heterodox beliefs concerning the Youth Masses.
The gist of the article is to cite a document from the Liturgy committee of the then NCCB from the mid 1970’s stateing that Youth Masses can be profitable on particular occasions and infrequently however the regular celebration of Youth Masses should be avoided because the youth are as much a member of the rest of the Parish as everyone else.
While in many instances I agree with that statement since then Life Teen Inc. was founded and sought and received approbation from the USCCB and the Holy See. It has taken great efforts to abide by the boundaries of the GIRM after its most recent revision with particular permissions that have been sought and received by the Holy See.
With the acceptance of the Life Teen Youth Mass by the CDW and the USCCB and its mission and form being widely accepted all while showing great fruits by its sincere effort to hold to orthodoxy with a face that is able to engage the modern youth culture is it correct to imply that those parishes that employ a regular youth mass are isolationalists and elitist communities? Is it correct to cite a document for proof of this that has no level of authority or certitude and ignore the more authoritative documents from the Holy See herself?
I find it amazing that the critique of the Youth Mass is coming from the admitted far left of this Archdiocese and not from the far right. Has anyone else experienced this in a similar way? As most know here, I myself am a former CORE member of a Life Teen group (only former because of time requirements) and an ardent patron of the Tridentine Rite mass. Personally I find this skewing of the facts disturbing and troublesome in and of itself.
