I will deal primarily with the YouTube website, but any further discussion is not limited to it alone.

Let me start by saying I’m not very enthusiastic of YouTube, but my aim here is not to bash it, rather, analyze it. I think it promotes many elements that hurt a society and the individual, such as self-glorification and radical individualism (As is evident by the majority of video postings being narcissistic and hopeless in nature). It appears sites like YouTube (and MySpace) mainly develop from American culture because of its own American idealism, supported by an ever-growing comedy-obsessed and entertainment-obsessed Western culture. However, I’m willing to admit there is also some good that somehow “borns” through these unchecked technological communications and outlets, just as the Internet itself. (ie: the rapid expansion and personal availability of the Internet has seen an explosion of addiction to sexual obscenity or the Internet itself, while at the same time, some of these viewers were able to get help or knowledge by various other tools on the Internet). However, the “awareness” seems to dwell in a minority, while the majority seem to be unaware of the effects of these popular medias.

While browsing through YouTube’s site, I come across a whole range of videos, very few good, very few educating, many bad, and many more utterly ridiculous. I did a search of various keywords such as “Catholic” among other religious keywords, and came across some that I think highlights my point of “some good borning from a bad thing”. There seems to be a minority, though a large one, of videos dealing with religious topics. Some of them (a minority within a minority) I believe are worthwhile to the soul, while others are worthwhile to our knowledge. There are not only videos pertaining to a Christian topic, but also other faiths such as Atheism or Islam. What is more interesting, is that within some of the video pages, there is extensive commenting or debating regarding the respective religious topic, from various religious backgrounds. Though most of the comments seem to be dominated by juvenile voices who lack proper education on the topic. I don’t recommend the discussions, just observing the fact. And the fact is, that even when human society creates these types of virtual societies that truly lack the real personal encounter with the human race, there is no lack of a religious dialogue. It’s almost as if the “dialogue” for Truth, which was sought to be eliminated in a new frontier, has managed to find it’s way there too. There is no greater example of this reality than this very Internet forum.

And so here is one small example of a video I personally thought was good and educating: youtube.com/watch?v=d20nzljVYPM

Any thoughts?

To watch YouTubes potential for greatness, as well as a celebration of a husband and wife raising their family and making funny and heartwarming videos type in this name and be amazed: nalts
