Hello all,
I don’t know of this is the right place, but I had a question. There was a video that was circulating on my facebook about a priest who was shaking kids by the hair and smacking them during the service. What are everyone’s thoughts? I don’t know who the priest is or the diosce
 
Not sure why he is doing that. I don’t find it appropriate. Is the church outside the U.S. or in the U.S.?
 
This did seem quite bizarre. Why were people lining their kids up for this? It was very public for no one to say anything.
 
It looks like he’s “blessing” them in his own fashion. The kids (except for one or two) don’t seem to mind, and you’ll notice a parent bringing up a very young child for this treatment.

Very strange indeed. And it seems like the kids who were trying to resist (by holding their head) got even stronger treatment. He was also gentle with the little ones and the child whose mother came up. Very strange indeed.
 
My own two cents here but it doesn’t matter if he was “gentle” with the younger kids. Abuse is abuse. That man should be jailed for hitting children.

No, it doesn’t matter. I only pointed it out because he did show restraint with some of the kids. This means he must know that he was hurting the others- otherwise he wouldn’t have changed his pressure. I’ve known people who don’t know their own strength and can be rough without knowing- this doesn’t seem to be the case here.
 
It just seems really strange, with all the stuff going on why would he even do that publicly.
 
It seems like we are viewing this from a different cultural perspective. Apparently this was not seen as abusive or disturbing in their culture. I know the bishop in my inlaws diocese does something quite similar at Confirmation and other sacraments. No one is offended by it in the slightest and most of the kids look forward to it and joke about it. Not terribly long ago when I was confirmed here in the US, my bishop tweaked our noses and slapped our cheeks. It was at one time common for bishops to do that in the US.

The way it looked to me was more like older brothers that pick up younger siblings by their ears or wrestle around in ways that look much worse than they actually are. Most boys enjoy that stuff and many girls do as well. Culturally we are conditioned that this type of stuff is bad or wrong or abusive, but in many cultures it is not viewed poorly at all. This is an example of people trying to view other cultures through our own culture and making problems for innocent people because of that. The parents obviously don’t have a problem with this and the kids don’t appear to either.

I think sometimes we view “culture” in the wrong way. Nobody’s “culture” should be void of common sense. If it is indeed cultural there should be instructions on the rite of hitting kids in mass…
Still waiting for that document.

Though pope Francis did describe spanking as a beautiful thing…

I agree, I think too many people are too quick to judge and jump to conclusions.
