The numerous ties between Revelations and Zachariah are remarkable. It is obvious that Revelations was influenced an more deeply probative of the ideas first mentioned in Zachariah. I find especially convincing the mentioning of the olive trees also symbolic in both scriptures as the anointed ones of God. The passage that mentions the olive trees also mention a scroll (book) that is instrumental of the curse God allows to come upon the earth, which cut of those who falsely swear by God on one hand, and those who steal on the other. Since it mentions the two sides that are cut off, similar as the the two olive trees on the side of the candle stick in Zachariah, it is possible to assume that this is why the two-witnesses are in sackcloth, i.e. one has been cut off as a thief, and the other one who swears by God falsely.
P.S. I find this a hopeful interpretation considering that it is known that the two-witnesses go to heaven, and therefore the tribulation of the curse might be severe but ultimately worth its heavenly reward.
P.S.S. It is also possible that the mystery of God evident in the scroll, which God revealed to the anointed ones, could be “the truth which sets us free” which Christ spoke of, as well as revealing the mystery of Christ’s baptism, which we must all summit, as when Jesus said, “I have much more to tell you, but you couldn’t bare them now.”
