My 13 year old daughter likes to play games like Zelda and The Hobbit where they are “fighting” against evil. I’m wondering if this is ok with Catholic principles? Also, is it harmless or should I stop this?

Any advice?

My general rule with video games for my son (age 14) is that his foe (if there is one) cannot be human. Monsters are OK, even if they LOOK sort of human.

For example, Zelda = OK

007 = Not OK
Mortal Kombat = Not OK
Grand Theft Auto = Not OK

The single exception I have made is the historic game series for PC by Microsoft, which includes Age of Empires, Age of Kings, etc.

That’s a good rule.

When I was addicted to Bond, I used to kill as many innocent scientists as possible without failing the mission. I had to actually give my N64 away to deal with my Bond addiction problem. I had beaten every level on agent, secret agent and 00 agent and unlocked every single cheat. There was nothing more to do, yet I could not stop playing. It was feeding on my life. It’s true. I’m not joking.

Sorry about this being off topic, but still a neat side note: Did you know the designer of the original Legend of Zelda came up with the story after watching Ridley Scott’s *Legend *starring Tom Cruise? So there’s your tid-bit of useless knowledge for the day. 🙂

The Zelda games are best ever. I’ve been playing them myself since the late 1980’s. Can’t wait for the new 2005 Zelda for Gamecube. 😃

Unfortunately, I haven’t played any since the SNES. I do occasionally check out Nintendo’s website to see what’s out. Man, I used to love those games!

Zelda games are the absolute best, unbeatable. It took me 10 years to beat Zelda 2 for the NES- because of one stupid little spot I couldn’t get past. Now those are games that are ok to play. Link is fighting to save Hyrule from an evil Magician! Perfect! Just like Peter saving Rome from Simon Magus, kind of. Good vs. Evil!

You said your kid is only 13? the problem is not Zelda in general, but which one she should play. She must play the original on NES and without exception the one on Super Nintendo. these will solidfy her appreciation of two of the top 10 artistic works for ANY gaming system forever! things like the hobbit steal away from Zelda’s greatness.

p.s.-why is it still called zelda, when you are Link and Zelda is not really talked about.

The one for super nintendo is by far the best one. Another great game that I loved was Super Metroid for Super Nintendo.

:bounce: Me too! Me too!:bounce:

I have been stuck in the Fire Temple FOREVER in ZELDA The Ocarina of Time, so I’ve put it on hold and am playing ZELDA The Windwaker right now.
My fellow homeschooling pregnant mom of four is borrowing my Ocarina of Time game, she loves it!

My hubby, my children and I every so often go head to head on MarioKart, it’s totally cool how we can play four players!👍

Who says video games are just for kids!!😃

But back OT, the only time I feel it conflicts with my Catholic Faith, is if I don’t want to stop playing and do my duties!!:o

MarioKart for SNES was a great game. Ocarina of Time is good but I did not like The Windwaker.

👍 Your son has good taste. If someone can only get 2 video games in their life, they should be Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.

Don’t forget that JRR Tolkein was a great Catholic author…and the one who converted CS Lewis (even if he did end up a Prot instead of a Catholic…).

Nothing wrong with the Hobbit or LOTR…although the games tend to suck for some reason. I’ve yet to play one that was any good…
