What is the difference between Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox ?

Basically, Coptic Orthodox hold to the decrees of the first three councils. Greek Orthodox accept the first seven. The two are not in communion, but I’m told they’re 99.9% the same.

Should this be moved to the NCR forum?

Since the question was on the Orthodox, evidently we’re not Eastern Catholic:confused: , yes.

The Copts hold to the first three formally, have held to the dogmas of the last three informally, rejected Chalcedon’s terminology but the theology of it, well, therein lies the rub.

The Copts have signed an agreement on this with the Orthodox, which the EO have not accepted (yet?) by either consensus, concilliarity or unanimony.

Yes, quite close and there is a limited intercommunion, mutual recognition of the Holy Mysteries, etc.

Wait a second! You guys accept the Holy Mysteries of a bunch of monophysites (and even have intercommunion with them!), but you refuse to accept those of the Catholic Church??

I guess the externals are more important; if it looks, sounds, and smells like Eastern Orthodoxy, it must be ok, no matter how grave the heresies they embrace. If it it’s too latin and western, though, you’ve gotta stay away from it! Now I get it.

The Copts have always looked, sounded and smelt like Eastern Orthodox. The question of what, if any heresy, they embraced was the issue why we would not approach them nor they us.

Only after hammering at the issues did the Copts satisfy themselves that we aren’t Nestorians, and we were satisfied that they didn’t subscribe to Eutyches’ heresy.

ONLY THEN, were the Holy Mysteries accepted.

As for externals, your uniates look, sound and smell like us (some even more than us:D ), but since they have embraced Rome,…

Also, even those who adamantly oppose the Western Rite Orthodox do not deny their priests are Orthodox priests, that they validly baptize, marry, can hear confession and proclaim absolution with Christ’s authority and that any Orthodox in communion with them can commune at an Orthodox Church. So no, externals are not the substance of our problem with Rome.

Could it be that the Eastern Orthodox churches see the Oriental Orthodox churches as closer to their own faith than the RCC?

How scholarly  It’s not that the fact that the RCC is Latin and Western that keeps it out of communion with the Orthodox, but the fact that the Orthodox Church sees it as a heretical church.

I always thought that the Orthodox taught that Christ has two natures: a divine nature and a human nature, and that these natures exist in one hypostasis.

Perhaps they changed their minds?

The Orthodox Church has selective vision if it acts like rejection of the council of Chalcedon isn’t heresy.

The Orthodox Church has selective vision if it feels that that rejection of the council of Chalcedon isn’t heresy.
I didn’t say it wasn’t heresy. I said that EO and OO have more in common that EO and RC.

Really? What ecumenical councils did the Catholics reject?
I don’t really see what that has to do with anything. In any case, I’m not trying to start an argument. I’m just telling you the reason why some EOs are more inclined to believe that OO mysteries are more “valid” than RC sacraments.

The Latins’ Vatican I has a problem with the decree of the Fifth Sixth Ecumenical Council (anathematizing a pope of Rome), and the filioque insertion violates the canons of the Second and Third which forbid tampering with the Creed, reverted and rejected Constantinople IV of 879 to accept that of 869, which 879 had annulled.

The Pope was not anathematized for expressing a heresy, but for failing to suppress one.

Really? Did it really say “The Church may not tamper with the Creed at a later date”? I think the canon was actually a prohibition on the introduction of a new Creed, not of an elaboration on the existing one.

The fact remains that the EO are fine with the rejection of an entire ecumenical council (Chalcedon), but abhore the apparent transgression of a single canon.

Maybe they are jealous that we have Sts. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas… Totally joking folks.

What is the difference between Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox ?
The simple answer is that the Copts are of the Communion typically referred to (in the common - but artificial - parlance) as Oriental Orthodox, while the Greeks are of that typically described as Eastern Orthodox.

Many years,

Neil (ignoring the fact that Eastern and Oriental are the same word except in English)
