¿Best Catholic Bible in Spanish?

I’ve set a goal of becoming more-or-less fluent in Spanish in 2013. Can anyone recommend a good Spanish Catholic Bible to help me learn? Any editions that have the English on one side and the Spanish on the other? What is the most commonly used Bible translation in Mexico? Wikipedia suggests the Biblia de Jerusalén is the most used (I have the English Jerusalem Bible and often use it), but that traditionalists prefer the 1825 Biblia de Petisco y Torres Amat, as it was translated directly from the St. Jerome’s Latin Vulgate, like the English language Douay-Rheims Bible was. Any specific editions or study bibles recommended?

Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

Maybe you should find out what Spanish translation is used here in the United States for the scripture readings at Spanish Masses. Perhaps that information would be in the missalettes in the pews. (Most churches here in Southern California have at least one Sunday Mass in Spanish, and I’m assuming that it’s the same in Arizona.)

I grew up with the Felix Torres Amat, La Sagrada Biblia Traducida de la Vulgata Latina al Español ; Nueva Edicion Guadalupana ; La Casa de la Biblia Catolica ; Imprimatur by +Antonio Rocca, Ob. Tit. de Augusta y Vic. Gen., Buenos Aires, 31 de julio de 1950 ; copyright 1965 by C.D. Stampley Enterprises. It’s in Spanish only and a very big book, 1466 pages.

This seems to be closest to what I have, except mine is black leather-bound with a golden cross with red on the front:

I’ve not seen a Latin-Spanish Bible and if anyone can recommend a version like that, that would be excellent! My English D-R Bible by Baronius does have the Latin and it’s very interesting to compare.

It does, thanks very much. I think I found another copy of that edition that I will buy. I’ve read that when you are learning another language, you should get books in that language about subjects that interest you and work through that to help learn faster. I will also start attending Spanish language Masses.
 
Yo tengo la Biblia de Jerusalén en letra grande. Edición Latinoamericana, revisada y aumentada. Me gusta mucho.

Otra edición muy popular es: Dios Habla Hoy.

Creo que una Biblia que se usa mucho en Latinoamerica es “La Biblia” Latinoamerica-Edicion Pastoral. Esta Biblia es muy facil de adquirir en las tiendas de articulos religiosos en Estados Unidos. Que Dios le bendiga.🙂

Great question. I would highly recommend The Navarre Bible.

Although available in English, it was originally translated into Spanish.

The entire project for the Spanish translation and commentary was initiated by St. Josemaria Escriva, along with the theological faculty at the University of Navarre.

Moreover, the Navarre Bible has received widespread acceptance among scholars as one of the best translations with commentary available today.

If you get in touch with Scepter Publishers, I suspect they would be happy to provide the original Spanish Navarre Bible.

…as far as “la Biblia de Jerusalén,” I consider it to be the best! I have a 1975 version (based on the French) that’s been my go to Bible forever!

…check with your local cable service or on-line for: María Visión–it is a Catholic channel from Mexico that offers the daily Mass live in Spanish.

Muchas Gracias for all the good suggestions. The Navarro Bible sounds very good as well. I may wind up with a whole shelf of Spanish language Bibles…
