Does anyone have an opinion about the next “Big Love” episode? At least “Big Love” is 95% correct about the LDS religion. At least it isn’t going to be a huge motion picture seen around the world like “The Da Vinci Code” was. Now they’re coming out with a second “Da Vinci Code”! We had a reason to be mad. “The Da Vinci Code” was a deliberate attack on Catholicism. How ironic, the Catholic Church was mad because “The Da Vinci Code” was claiming we have grave secrets we won’t reveal about The Church and Jesus’ life, and now LDS are mad because their secrets might be revealed.

What is in the “Big Love” episode that is so troublesome to Mormons?

God bless

They are going to show the temple endowment ceremony.
Thank you.

You will have to excuse my ignorance on this matter… But what does it matter? Are the temple endowment ceremonies for Mormon eyes only?

Oh and what are the temple endowment ceremonies? :o

God bless

Thank you.

Yes. Only a Mormon in good standing can gain a “recommend” from his/her bishop to enter the LDS temple and participate in the ordinances there. They promise never to reveal the secret handshakes and passwords they learn in the endowment, and to never discuss the temple ceremonies outside the temple. So for other people to reveal them makes them very upset.

In the temple, Mormons are washed and annointed, and make covenants and take on certain obligations to serve their church. They also learn “signs and tokens” (secret handshakes and passwords borrowed from the first 3 degrees of freemasonry) that will allow them to pass by the angels who stand guard over the entrance to heaven. After doing these things for themselves, they then perform the rites by proxy on behalf of dead people (including baptism for the dead).

I am Catholic. Not Mormon. Never have been. That said, I LOVE Big Love! Wouldn’t miss it. Just for the entertainment factor. It’s the best show I’ve seen in a long time. I’ll definitely be watching. For some reasons, the characters just draw me in and I have to see what happens next.

I think the Catholic Church was also annoyed by the misrepresentation of their beliefs and the history of Christianity in the Da Vinci Code. I anticipate more misrepresentation in this episode of Big Love in relation to the portrayal of temple ordinances.

I also love to watch Big Love. It’s a big culture shock to those of us who are not LDS, but it is a good show!

I think it will be an accurate demonstration of the ceremony. They have not really done too many things that were out of context with the beliefs of the LDS doctrine. Actually, the only thing I can think of is the polygamy part. I know that is a huge part of it, but everything else is pretty right on. From what I understand from other Mormons, the show is pretty accurate. My husband’s family is LDS.

Thank you.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds temples, where various ordinances are performed, both for the living, and for the dead. These ceremonies include baptism for the dead, sealing (eternal marriage), and the endowment. Because we believe temples to be sacred houses of the Lord Jesus Christ, and due to the sacred nature of the covenants and ordinances that occur in them, only those LDS striving to holiness may enter them after receiving a “recommend”. Before a temple is dedicated, thousands of LDS and non-LDS tour the facilities, and are able to see and learn about the functions of a temple.

The endowment is an ordinance done in the temple that portrays the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the plan of salvation. We make covenants with God, and come to know His power and mercy.

I have never known much about LDS, but it seems as if gnosticism is especially alive and well there. I guess it makes some people very happy to believe that they have knowledge no one (or very few anyway) has, and to also believe that they are more “worthy” than others. Knowing the sinner I am, I just glad that the Catholic Church teaches that we all must repent, and that she give us this beautiful season of Lent to focus on repentence and the cross!

So I am reading from Paul’s link he gave me.

LDSGuy, is the article true to what goes on in the Temple? Or are you not a Mormon in good standing with the Church and don’t know?

God bless

So you would consider the link Paul gave me to be anti-Mormon?

Which parts in particular do you feel are anti-Mormon, or misrepresent Mormon teaching?

Thanks for the links.

God bless

No problem 👍

I have attended the temple, and as stated above, because we regard the temple and the ordinances that occur in them as sacred, we do not discuss the specifics of them. The links that I provided speak to the general nature that we discuss the ceremonies, and they let you know their purposes and why we build temples.

That website is full of anti-Mormon statements, and is made by an ex-Mormon. Just as I would not go to an anti or ex-Catholic source to learn about Catholicism, I would not advise going to an anti or ex-LDS source to learn about our Church. There is much that is written about our temples that gives you the background to them and the ceremonies, that do not go into specifics about the actual words, actions, etc.

I understand. Thank you LDSGuy.

I will read both and draw my conclusion, (For what ever my conclusion is worth :D)
