When I heard about what the Democrats did in NY in regard to abortion, I shouted to my mom in anger, “I hope they burn in Hell, they deserve it!” Or something similar. I did not premeditate it but I realize it was wrong to say.

I then included the conversion of Andrew Cuomo in my Rosary Novena and I certainly, after the moment do not wish them Hell.

I then didn’t think about it being grave matter or a mortal sin and didn’t have the opportunity for confession so I went to mass twice since. I just thought of it tonight before confession.

Is that grave matter? Mortal sin?

Thoughts. Obviously I will control my tongue in the future and just expect horror from them so I’m not caught off guard, pray for them, etc.

You reacted with a level of unconsciousness.

Not a mortal sin, but not a good reaction

See them in their poverty, not the state of their souls in God’s eyes which we don’t know.

Personally, I would not feel bad about that. I think a lot of people feel this way. I wish more people would feel this way. Same thing regarding Virginia Gov. Northam’s remarks basically having to do with infanticide. It is good to be outraged.

Also, Cuomo claims to be Catholic. By praying for conversion, I assume you mean that he would draw closer to having a relationship with Jesus, wherein he does not support murdering babies.

Outrage is one thing, but it isn’t right to wish people to hell. None of us have earned salvation. The OP has the right idea about this. It was the wrong thing to say. But since it was said in anger and the OP immediately repented and has resolved to discipline himself against such statements in the future, I’d guess it was a venial sin at most.
