If one professes to be Catholic, that person should believe ALL that the Catholic Church believes and teaches. To willfully reject any of the Church’s teachings makes you what we call a cafeteria Catholic, meaning you are not Catholic no matter what you call yourself. Stated another way, you accept it all, or not at all.

i am a cradle catholic and used to be a cafeteria one too. once believed on woman’s right to choose, eucharist as a symbol, etc. what did my church do to me? nothing. no accusation of “YOU’RE NOT A CATHOLIC NO MATTER WHAT YOU CALL YOURSELF” foolish charge. our God is a God of love and mercy. one day in jan 2002 the Holy Spirit touched me and since then i reeducated myself on my Catholic faith. found that it has the fullness of truth. been absorbed with learning the Word of God and my wife (best judge) noticed my change, my transformation. i was walking in the shadow of death and our good God showed me his great light. Praise to Him.

Actually we should call it like it really is. Cafeteria Catholic is simply a polite expression for heretic. Any Catholic who rejects one or more of the Church teachings is committing heresy.

Why are we stone throwers? Thistle was just offering a definition of ‘heretic’, not ‘sinner’, since this thread is regarding ‘picking and choosing’ which dogmas to believe. I was just teasing him and Paul earlier in the thread. However, I didn’t see any stones being thrown (as far as I can remember of this thread). What are you referring to, Island Oak? Thanks.

You should educate yourself on the Church’s definitions of sin and heresy.

Yes, thanks and praise be to God who is so patient with us foolish mortals. I use to think I knew it all, only to find out I was walking like you, in the shadow of death. I praise him for his patience and loving care for each of us. We do indeed have an awesome God, who loves infinitely, forgivers infinitely and nurtures us to learn that he is the only way. Praise be to God.

I think it is a bit harsh to label someone a heretic because they don’t believe in everything the Church teaches with no equivication. It is not sin to question something…even the Blessed Virgin Mary questioned, “how can this be?” and needed further explanation.

The need for patience and further explanation is very great for many Catholics. Don’t mistake questions and doubts with flat out rejection. Prayer and gentle explanation is more effective than quick labels.

Disagreement is one thing, disobedience is another. I know there have been some people that may disagree with some of the Church’s teaching however, they fully obey and pray that they may come to fully understand Her teachings. I know some that go the other way. They agree and understand all teachings however, they claim they have a “right” to obey their “conscience” as witness with many voting for pro-abortion candidates this past election. It is not wrong to disagree, however it is our duty to obey. I disagree with some civil laws, however that does not excuse me from disobeying them.

Two terms that are highly used
“Cafeteria Catholic” and “non-practicing Catholic” are both an oxymoron. There are some that claim they are one or the other and at times used it is a gloating manner. They use it almost in the same manner as saying “I’m an Eastern Orthodox Catholic”, or “I’m a Roman Catholic”, etc.
Those terms “Cafeteria Catholic and non-practicing Catholic” actually mean to say
“I’m a Catholic but do not live my life like a Catholic”, or" I’m a Catholic but not a good Catholic", or “I’m a Catholic that does not think my faith is important to live it”.
A Catholic who lives like he is not a Catholic slowly starts to loose their adhesion to Catholic doctrine or their Catholic identity. Each day he is less and less Catholic. Their relationship with God will be reduced to social commitments. Baptize my children because that’s what my parents did; marry in church simply to look good; get confirmed because that’s what I need to get married, etc. They become basic so to speak that one fails to think about God and how we should direct ourselves towards Him.

just as our Lord Jesus said that if your house is built on sand, strong wind will blow it away. JW, Mormons and 7DA thrive because of Catholics who are not grounded in their faith. they are easily swayed away from RC. after joining their new found faith, many of them become active in their new church. but eventually they would find their way back to Rome. we have to pray for them. Praise be to God.
