Letter “Iuvenescit Ecclesia” to the Bishops of the Catholic Church
Regarding the Relationship Between Hierarchical and Charismatic Gifts
in the Life and the Mission of the Church

“Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but whoever prophesies builds up the Church” (I Cor 14:4). The Apostle does not reject the gift of glossolalia, a charism of prayer useful for the personal relationship with God, and he recognizes it as an authentic charism, although not directly having a communal benefit: “I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you, but in the Church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue” …

The Sovereign Pontiff Francis, in the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect on 14 March 2016, approved the present Letter, adopted in the Plenary Session of this Congregation, and ordered its publication.

Here is an official document of the Church defining Paul’s letter to the Corinthians as Paul referring to glossolalia. I learned about this document as I was doing a little research. No offence…but this document is actually quite well known to anyone who has any aspect of their life and work touching upon the harmonisation of the Church’s hierarchical and charismatic gifts. It was actually a long time in coming and also a long time in preparation and revision.

**The Apostle does not reject the gift of glossolalia,

Glossolalia is normally considered a human vocal free-speech element of the physical material anatomy, that is, there are unintelligible language sounds. It is possible that some genetic chromosomal disorder is responsible for a disconnect between language and proper physical voice expression.

Please note that Paul does not write that all of a sudden, a real person who already has a real genome, gets the gift of an immediate infusion of glossolalia.

There is a huge difference between infusion of glossolalia and accepting the presence of what could be glossolalia which the Holy Spirit then uses as Prayer Tongues. This is why Paul does not reject glossolalia per se. Paul will not limit the Holy Spirit as to what sounds, French or unintelligible language, that the Holy Spirit is permitted to use.
Obviously, there are some Catholics who cannot imagine the Holy Spirit having the power to use a person’s speech mechanism to make strange prayer sounds, glossolalia whatever.

Often Catholics do not understand what it means to “yield to the Holy Spirit.” Obviously, Paul and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal took the “yielding” in Acts 2: 1-4 to be serious stuff for the Catholic Church.

It is Paul who put his trust in the Holy Spirit to the point that if Holy Spirit prayer Tongues included strange unintelligible sounds such as what occurs in the definition of glossolalia, he accepted the “gift” of prayer Tongues not given by the physical anatomy but given directly by the Holy Spirit.

I do not mean to be rude. But I find it really sad that there are some, not all, Catholics who apparently have difficulty in understanding more than one verse at a time – especially in 1 Corinthians, chapter 14, verse 18 or verse 19. I do realize that some, not all, Catholics have never heard about the content in 1 Corinthians, chapter 12. Please let me say that 1 Corinthians, chapter 12 is important.
