Tonight we had a guest priest saying Mass. During his homily he said something about Jesus and the Eucharist, saying something along the lines of Jesus appeared ordinary to others, but “maybe” He was God. And “maybe” the Eucharist is Jesus.

I assume his was a figure of speech, but, does the Catholic Church allow for the an ambiguous belief that Jesus is God and the Eucharist is Jesus?

Like I said, I think his was just a figure of speech. Father appeared very pious, otherwise.

No, either of those beliefs is what the Church calls “heresy.”

But judging by the fact that you have a track record of misunderstanding what people say (I’ve personally witnessed you misunderstanding words Fr David spoke on CAF) I would say you probably just misunderstood the Priest.

You can only ask the priest he meant. It sounds like you can’t even correctly recall what he said.

He was almost certainly describing the thought process of some imagined person, with respect to the meaning of Jesus and the Eucharist. In such a context, those “maybes” make perfect sense. They describe the gradual experience of conversion.

I think “maybe” was what those who viewed that Christ was “ordinary” would. have to yet consider…surely he was not implying the possibility of anything other than the real presence…put into proper context of his words, he did nothing wrong.

Thank you for your answer.

Uh…thanks? Don’t we all have that problem from time to time?

Maybe this is a sign you should pay closer attention to the homily?

well, it’s hard to know what the priest meant without the context.

but to answer the question, no, the church does not approve of jesus "maybe’ being God and the eucharist ‘maybe’ being Jesus. there is no wiggle room on that one

It sounds like you’re attempting to take a figure of speech literally. That will never work well.

No the Church does not allow ambiguous belief.

He was using a figure of speech.

It’s like hearing someone say “just maybe the sky is blue” or “just maybe water is wet.”
Thanks. That’s what I thought.

After reading your post, It sounds like it wasn’t “ambiguous” at all. Jesus did look like your “ordinary person”, but the same people who thought that seemed to have a strong enough faith to believe that he “might” be God, and that He also might be the “real Presence” that Jesus taught at the Last supper.

Right! Maybe there are too many maybes in this story about the priest who said “Maybe”.

Give the priest the benefit of the doubt and assume he believes in the doctrines of the Church. After all, that’s all one can do. One never knows if a priest really believes the Faith. But give him the benefit of the doubt because he professes the Faith when he recites the creed
