spent her time making fun of people
This alone destroys any reason to listen. I have read many of the arguments on all sides of the “is the bible true” issue. Those who are respectful I listen to with interest. Those who are belittling I quickly dismiss. The conversation can always be interesting but I have no time for rudeness.

The faithful have had to put up with priests and nuns like this for decades. Heartbreaking and painful.

I think the Bible is basically true, but Protestants take it literally. When God said he created the world in seven days, he didn’t literally mean he created the world in one week. God is out of time so “one day” to us could be any amount of time for him. We can’t just interpret the Bible however we want. I hope this helps!!! 🙂

I have occassionally come across writers or speakers who seem intent on debunking every miraculous event in the bible. But seldom I have known actual clerics who took such an attitude.

The Bible is not a book. The Bible is a bookshelf. Depending on who you ask there are more than 60 or more than 70 books.
There are several genres represented in that bookshelf.
The Song of Solomon is a poem expressing in symbolic form the love of God for His creation. There is no literal maiden preparing to wed a literal king.
The Book of Proverbs is just that, a collection of wise sayings.
The Book of Psalms is a collection of songs, poetry and prayers.
The Gospel According to John is a historical account of the ministry of Jesus. When John reports that Jesus told a crowd “you must eat my flesh and drink my blood” you may interpret his words as being spiritual or symbolic (I don’t: I think it’s literal truth), but John is telling us that Jesus the Messiah really and literally did tell the crowd this.

The Song of Solomon is still a poem and Proverbs is still a collection of wise sayings.

The author uses the rudeness as a reason to disregard his least favorite method of biblical exegesis, the historical critical method.
Right. He’s conflating the historical-critical method with a particular interpretative heuristic, and using it as a whipping boy to criticize that heuristic. Poor foundation.

As a priest used to tell us “Everything in the Bible is true, and some of it actually happened.”

I must have misunderstood the original intent of the post. Nothing unusual there. lol

Do You Really Believe That? - Catholic Stand

Many persons have attempted to redefine the teachings of the Church by negating the Word of God in the name of science, truth cannot contradict Truth.
That’s because they’re followers of Scientism -
which in turn presents a False Either-Or matrix - pitting science against (generally) Christianity.

science? Is one of the products of Man…
Akin to Man’s quest to Know Everything about Everything.

Catholicism? Has no problem whatsoever with science - and accepts all that is ‘true’.

What a coincidence, back in the 1970s I had the same type experience your MIL did, only in my case it involved a Sister of St. Joseph who was teaching Bible history to me and my fellow high school freshmen. She made fun of the girls in the class who literally believed in Genesis. (She was also not a very nice person on a couple other occasions. I think maybe she had some issues. Or didn’t like teaching. Or was trying to be “super modern”. )

Best to just ignore such mocking people and pray for them.
