I know there are roughly 1.6 billion Catholics worldwide but do any of you know a rough percentage of those who are actually practicing Catholics? If not what would you guess

No idea. Most Catholics in the “Western World” are not practicing, while most in the “developing world” are practicing.

However, South America & the Caribbean both throw a wrench into the works because while many would consider them to be part of the developing world, they seem to be more in line with the “West” when it comes to religion.

Also, what do you consider “practicing”? People who follow every teaching as close as possible? Or people who don’t necessary follow every teaching, but still have a catholic worldview and outlook?

Would Pew Research have stats on that? They’re reputable as well.

Is this a homework assignment? Statistics for mass attendance are accessible online. You can extrapolate from there. 🙂

HAHA no😂, I’m just worried for countries like Mexico and other countries if they loose their faith and wanted to know the current stats. I will be praying for those today who are Catholics but non-practicing, I tried to look it up but I couldn’t find anything.

I caught an article a while back that showed demographics and for younger (young adult) practicing Catholics in the United States it is around 18%

Good point let’s just say for the purpose of this practicing means going to mass at Christmas and Easter and believes in God.

Or you could define it as once a week mass at least + belief in God

Let me consult Cerebro…

Much of Latin America has a true priest shortage. I don’t mean the one priest per 2000 faithful you might see in North America. I mean one priest per 10 000 faithful.
Protestantism especially Pentecostalism is also a huge deal in much of Latin America. I think Brazil is now 30-40% Pentecostal?

I believe CARA did an annual poll on this some years ago and consistently found that 20-25% of self-identified Catholics go to mass every week. I think that’s the best (only?) way to define “practicing”.

Yes. What is the definition of practicing for the Church? mass every sunday?

For survey statistiques in France, the common definition is usually “one time per mounth”.

Not every sin separates one from the Church (only deliberate heresy, schism, or apostasy–when it comes to laity, this usually means converting to something else or expressly disassociating oneself from the Church). One can never go to Mass, never go to confession, and commit all sorts of sins every day and still be a Catholic.

The vastness of the Church and the fewness of the saved are both spoken of in many places in Scripture, but summed up as “Many are called, but few are chosen.” While it should be difficult to bear, it should not be surprising that there are so many Catholics, but that so few Catholics “practice.”

Deacon Jeff, you wrote: '…you will need define “practicing”. Mass every week. Mass a few times a month. Mass about once a month, Mass on Christmas and Easter only. Mass every now and then but affirm and believe all that the Church teaches. I pray and I still think of myself as a Catholic. Seldom go to Mass but consider self to still be a “practicing Catholic”?

This gets pretty tricky considering how insulting it would be to tell someone who self-identifies as “Catholic” and considers themselves to still be a “practicing Catholic”, "OH GEE Sorry, we don’t count you, you don’t go to Mass enough, or pray enough, or go to confession enough.’

I follow Pew Research studies and find them to have integrity in their research. They often classify Roman Catholics (predominantly in the US) as from all who were Baptized Catholic, some identify as 1) cultural Catholic, 2) as practicing Catholics who attend Mass weekly, 3) practicing Catholics who attend Mass at least once a year, 4) ex-Catholic, and 5) those who were baptized but say they are not Catholic.

As you know, the church itself counts every person baptized Catholic as Catholic.
