Paul said don’t believe in techings of man!
Does it mean that we don’t need to believe in Pope’s Teaching

Should we believe in the teachings of Paul since he was a man?

No, both Paul and the Pope teach with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, although in different ways.

Paul teaches with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit prevents the Pope from teaching in error.

So, what is Paul telling us? Don’t follow the teachings that don’t originate from God. The Pope’s role and his teaching authority certainly come from God, so we are following Christ, when we follow him.

The Church is the Bride of Christ. And in marriage, the two become one…

Well considering the author (Paul) was among the first Catholics whom followed Christ and Peter (the first Pope). I would say that it’s safe that He means to follow the teachings of Christ (the Church) and not the teachings of man (Martin Luther, your local non-denominational pastor, etc).

1st Corinthians 1:14 is as follows:

I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

It says nothing about “don’t believe in the teachings of man”.

In 1st Corinthians 1:10, it reads:

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

As far as following the teachings of a Pope, that is a different story. A Pope is only considered to be speaking “infallibly” when he meets the requirements set forth by the 1st Vatican council in 1870:

Therefore, faithfully adhering to the tradition received from the beginning of the Christian faith, to the glory of God our savior, for the exaltation of the Catholic religion and for the salvation of the Christian people, with the approval of the Sacred Council, we teach and define as a divinely revealed dogma that when the Roman Pontiff speaks EX CATHEDRA, that is, when, in the exercise of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church, he possesses, by the divine assistance promised to him in blessed Peter, that infallibility which the divine Redeemer willed his Church to enjoy in defining doctrine concerning faith or morals. Therefore, such definitions of the Roman Pontiff are of themselves, and not by the consent of the Church, irreformable.

The only time the Pope has spoken ex cathedra since Vatican 1 was in 1950, when Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary as an article of faith for all Catholics.

Celebrating Christmas Day is not a teaching but a church discipline.

The Church teaches that Christ was born. This teaching is rooted in Sacred Scripture and tradition. (Matthew 1:25; Luke 2:7)

The Church, as a matter of discipline, has set aside December 25 as an annual day of remembrance of the mystery of Christ’s birth. Catholics can hardly be faulted for contemplating the events of Christ’s life.

Heronimo, are you sure you didn’t mean Titus 1:14? Or Mt 15:9?

I have good search software, and can’t find the phrase “teachings of men” in either the KJV or the RSV. And as mwalker said, it’s definitely not in 1 Cor 1:14.

It would be easier to answer you if we had the right Scripture verse.

Thanks,

Ruthie

Thanks for the C0rrection! Sorry again…😃

…that they may be sound in the faith, 14 instead of giving heed to Jewish myths or to commands of men who reject the truth. Titus 1:13-14 (RSV)
OK, now it’s easy to answer your question! The Pope does not reject the truth. If he did, he wouldn’t be the Pope.

You may also have the common idea that we Catholics think the Pope is infallible all the time. He’s not! He’s a sinner like the rest of us. There are strict guidelines for what is or is not an infallible teaching. There have been only two infallible teachings by a Pope in the past 150 years or so.

Todd has it right about Christmas.

God bless you,

Ruthie
