The word prophecy can be used in a broad sense or in a second sense in keeping with Scripture, speaking words actually from God. And so the stories of the Old Testament prophets are filled with phrases like “thus spoke the Lord,” when they prophesied. I would not say that any use of a word is wrong, different uses of a word just involving different definitions.
I have known people who gave prophecies in the Biblical sense, speaking words from God, in the charismatic movement. However, saints have also had this gift from God too, of whom I have heard many stories. Off hand, for one example, Padre Pio knew and indicated when he was going to die.
I realize that ordinary Christians have also been known to speak words from God, through this may be no common thing. To give another example dredged up from my memory, I recall an event in the life of St. Peter Canisius. When he was young and not even a priest, a simple laywoman and who he didn’t know told him he would be greatly important to the faith in the future, and so he was later.
