1 Corinthians 11 and women

Why do women not wear scarfs or veils to cover their heads anymore? I was studying 1 Corinthians 11 and now wear a scarf/mantilla to mass every time. Because from how I read it was that women should be wearing something to cover their heads like how brides wear veils, and since the church is Christ’s bride, we as women should be covering our heads still. Or if you are a woman you could cut your hair short and then you don’t have to cover your head with anything. … I worried at first what people would think due to Muslim women even though the reasons for coverings are not the same reasons at all and as a Catholic it’s more about having reverence for God and respect for the blessed sacrament. Anyone still veil?? Why or why not?
 
Women tend to veil at EF Masses. However, it is not required. I think it is a beautiful practice, but it is just that, a practice not a key tenet of our faith.

Veiling is a personal devotion which women choose to take on for a multitude of reasons — personally, I have a few, but my main reasons are outward acknowledgement & reverence for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and as a sign & reminder of my surrender to God’s will. There are a lot of great resources on the web that look into the multiple reasons why women veil now.

Because covering the head was a cultural discipline, not a Dogma. Even though it was mentioned by St. Paul, it was understood as a cultural discipline.

The Church has three kinds of teachings discipline, doctrine and dogma. Doctrine and dogma cannot change or removed (it can develop or be further defined, but not altered). But discipline can be changed and even removed.

The head coverings (like many things in the Old Testament) was considered discipline not doctrine.

There is an upward trend of veiling. It’s associated with a resurgence of interest in tradition.

Veiling is optional. If you are inclined to do so then do so. If you are not then don’t (1Cor 11:17)
 
If women can have their heads uncovered, I guess men can wear baseball caps or fedoras at Mass. Quid pro quo.
 
I think the same passage says men who cover their heads dishonour themselves, though I could be wrong. I don’t have my bible handy.

I think women who veil at Mass are beautiful people concerned with their own salvation. At the same time, women who do not, I think are equally concerned with their salvation but also culturally aware. Their prayer is just as good as the veiled woman’s, though I always advocate veiling because of that passage.

We have to think about men, as well, monks who often pray with their hoods up. At the end of the day, or to be frank, when we pray, God knows our hearts better than the outside world. In fact, he knows our hearts perfectly.

As we know, I didn’t. But still I stand by what I said, that veiling is a wonderful tradition but a prayer is a prayer.
 
Can’t tell you the last time I saw a veiled woman engaging in idle chatter at Mass. Maybe it’s just coincidence.
 
The letters in NT were written to specific churches talking about something that they were struggling with or needed advise. Depending upon if the receivers were of Jewish or Greek (pagan) background there were different issues. Sometimes you also have to look into the culture of the area. In some cultures it is tradition that married or widowed women cover their heads and girls don’t. In some areas the “women acting not so honourably” didn’t cover their heads while the honourable women did.
 
Many of us do choose to cover and I think that there is a definite growing acceptance of the call to cover among traditionalist families.

I’d be more concerned about implementing the teaching that ladies should be quiet in church . 😀

We don’t do it because the Magisterium says that it isn’t required.

We follow the teaching of the Magisterium in the Catholic Church. We do not go by our own (or your) interpretation of the Bible.

Women who want to wear a veil or hat for whatever reason are still free to do so if they choose. I wear a veil or scarf when I go to Traditional Latin services, because the idea is to be traditional and connect with my ancestors who attended such services. i do not feel a need to cover my head every time I go to church or Adoration though.
 
What does this have to do with anything and veiling? Does your parish have lots of chatty women?

Because cultural norms change. Those who went about with uncovered heads 2000 years ago were prostitutes. That is not the case now.
