The film tells a generation of older men that pursing sexual relationships with teenagers is beautiful and empowering, and perfectly acceptable.
This is true. A lot of the marrying of younger women to older men was largely the choice of the girl’s parents and the idea was to marry her to a man who was established economically and could provide for her and her children and basically take care of her.I imagine in the past a woman would have been a lot more guided by her parents when considering a husband so maybe there was less scope for older men to take advantage. It’s hard to draw comparisons in this area.
I agree, if he had been 18 or 19 I would have considered it just another Hollywood “coming of age” movie.Had Timothee Chalamet’s character been just a few years older I feel like people would be more on board with the couple’s consent.
That’s the thing though. This sort of behavior is all of a sudden getting way frowned upon with #MeToo. The entire theme of the Oscars was freaking #MeToo. Plus we just had the whole Kevin Spacey thing and other male actors being accused of groping or assaulting younger men.where they find it totally acceptable for 16 year old actresses to date 30+ year old actors, and for 16 year old actresses to attend parties with older actors while drinking.
This movie won’t age well, imo.Hollywood simply can’t turn around in the face of all that and gush over an age-gap romance movie. It’s ridiculous.
