Are we allowed to drink a cup of coffee in the 1 hour fast before mass? And also is it an hour before mass begins or an hour before receiving communion?

No, you must fast from food and drink except medicine and water. The fast is one hour prior to receiving Eucharist

Yes, it is a one hour fast up to the time of receiving communion.

It is a rather ridiculously easy fast, nearly being met by simply not eating or drinking during Mass itself!

If I were in charge of the matter, (which no one should ever seriously consider), I would be sorely tempted to put in place the previous practice of fasting from the previous midnight until receiving communnion–a fast that included both food and water. Yes, generations of Catholics practiced the fast from midnight.

Medicine and water are alright to have. But you have to fast an hour before mass. This is because your basically making yourself “empty” in order for when you take the Eucharist your body is a clean temple for Jesus to enter into.

It is an our before receiving communion, not before the beginning of the mass.
