I’m still trying to reconcile science that says there was never fewer than 10,000 people on earth and the Church that says Adam and Eve were the first people. Can somebody please help me?

Populations evolve, not individuals. You could have community of pre-humans evolving together. Ten thousand individuals across a large area, but with sufficient movement and interbreeding that it can all be considered one species. It’s more complex than this, but I think the point is that two humans didn’t appear in a vacuum or immediately separate themselves from the rest of the group. This pre-human population over time became a human population.

Now, that said, was there a point at which two people in the population became (rationally) ensouled even as other individuals weren’t? With only a small (but at the same time so large) gap between them? And then through interbreeding over time that ensoulment spread through all individuals in the population?

I don’t know. As Deacon Jeff said, the Bible isn’t a science book, and there are some things in history (or pre-history) we cannot answer definitively.

My priest said that we can’t believe in polygenism but I read something about its not contrary to our faith to believe God created a species of creatures resembling humans through a series of evolutionary actions then chose Adam and Eve into which impart human souls, making them the only humans.

Is that polygenism or not?

I read that on Catholic Bridge. Is that a reliable site? Anyone know?

How would science know that there were never fewer than 10,000 human beings? 🤷

Sounds like a hogwash notion to me.

They go by human genetics and ancient allelic lineages of the HLA-DRB1gene etc.

It’s very complicated.

I know of one scientist, Ann Gauger, who believes we could’ve come from two individuals but that’s pretty much it?, except for the other two authors of her book, Science and Human Origins.

In other words you have no idea.
I don’t either.
God being God, anything is possible.
I have my own untestable “theories”.
It’s all speculation based on pretty huge assumptions, the wildest being that it happened randomly.

I just don’t understand it.

Do you need to?

It’s called FAITH.
Your name is Faith.
Try living the truth of the Bible, instead of dissecting it. You’ll get much much more out of it. The Bible has a richness that elevates our minds beyond this world.
It’s supposed to bring peace of mind. All will be revealed when we get to heaven,

So nobody has the answers to my questions in post #4?
Your note in post 4 is touched on in the link I provided.

It’s an interesting read.

I suppose I should add that it’s just analysis (ideas), so don’t expect to understand something.

To eliminate suspense the last paragraph:

“It is illogical and unbiblical to create a false dichotomy between what the fossil record tells us and what the Bible tells us. In the end, there is only one story, God’s story, written in His Word and His Works. Through paleoanthropology, humans can trace the finger of God’s works in the world. The God who conceived the universe and spoke it into being is the same God who sustains all its laws and guides all its transformative and emerging processes, including the process of hominid evolution.”

The answer, Faith, is we just don’t know.

Genes do not fossilize and nor does the human soul.

A lot of categories we think are fixed and obvious are in-fact nothing of the kind. Paleontologists 3,000,000 years from now might not consider Chihuahuas and Great Danes to have been the same species. So how do we know where species “bottlenecks” were for beings we now know only as bones?

All we can do is have faith 🙂 and leave the rest to God.

ICXC NIKA.

I read it but it’s mostly over my head. 😊
Then you just hit the nail on the head.

We can think up, dream up, and analyze how this stuff all connects, but there will not be a ‘definite answer’ because none of us are God.

Why would you accept what some scientists say in this regard? Their statement of a population bottleneck is a weak hypothesis that cannot rise to the level of a theory, as it cannot be tested.

Can you trust God? His church has clearly stated that we have two sole original parents. There are no scientific facts, only speculations, that contradict this teaching.

Oh, I’m really tired of discussing this question over and over… :coffeeread:

Well, it’s a problem for Faith, so it doth behooveth us to be there for her.

Ultimately though, there are no nice answers.

In Genesis it is said that Eve was from Adam’s rib. Perhaps after the Fall, Adam still had some sort of supernatural gift, symbolically explained by the rib story. So that other pre -humans were joined to Adam in some way. Thus making them fully human, and children of Adam? Just speculation on my part.🤷
