Haydock Commentary:
Shall perish by the sword. This was not to condemn the use of the sword, when employed on a just cause, or by lawful authority. Euthymius looks upon it as a prophecy that the Jews should perish by the sword of the Romans. Wi. — Our divine Saviour would not permit this apostle to continue in his pious zeal for the safety of his Master. He says to him: put up thy sword. For he could not be unwilling to die for the redemption of man, who chose to be born for that end alone. Now, therefore, he gives power to his implacable enemies to treat him in the most cruel manner, not willing that the triumph of the cross should be in the least deferred; the dominion of the devil and man’s captivity in the least prolonged. S. Leo.
Let us all live by Christ’s example; did He ever carry a sword? He could have fraught back when arrested, but He chose to be crucified. WHY?

I cannot believe people especially Catholics are advocating guns!

:nope:
What is inherently wrong with guns? If it’s due to the potential to hurt people then you might as well also say it’s un-Catholic to advocate for knives, baseball bats, alcohol, and cars.

Many suicides are the result of a very temporary urge and guns make it too quick and easy.
Murders as well.

It takes a little more work and intent to kill someone with a bat or hammer then to point a gun and fire off a 5 bullets in less then a minute.

Because He was the sacrifice necessary for humanity to be redeemed. That’s a much different scenario than someone hunting, target shooting for fun, or defending themselves from harm.

Robert

I think you have a lot of good points.

In most big cities there is a correlation with illegal drugs and killings.

In most states, 48 of them, marijuana is officially illegal. But if seventh and eighth grade children can buy it–it is not really illegal. There are tons of illegal drugs that come into New York City–train car loads. The military could stop it in a week, if they wanted to stop it.

Perhaps we need to enforce the illegal drug laws.

Also, this thread is arguing two different worlds–Kingdom of God and the history of our freedom in America.

American should not give up their guns. “I want to hunt and play with my rifle.” I am a good person and should not be punished for the drug world’s crimes.

Somebody could have tried to murder Him during His ministry, which would have been more of a tragedy than a willing sacrifice. And the Jews of that age could have hired somebody to assassinate Him.

I don’t see how that relates to arguments about firearms, but even so I doubt the authorities would have tried to assassinate Him since that would not have had their intended objective of making an example of Him via trial and public execution.

Would Christ have at all resisted if somebody came up to Him with a sword and tried to kill Him?

I doubt it since it would conflict with His purpose for entering into the world. That is a lot different from contemporary issues of personal safety.

And what is our purpose for entering into this world?

When the crowd conspired to throw Him off of a cliff, He somehow “passed through them.” So, I think it can be said that the Son of God “resisted” when some tried to kill him. Where you are trying to go with that argument is beyond me. Jesus never said that we should be a doormat and give in to unjust violence against us and our families. It is a duty and an obligation for a mother or father to protect their families from unjust aggression. I sincerely doubt that Jesus would have a problem with it.

'Turn the other cheek." Or does that only apply when somebody unjustly slaps you?

Wait a minute, Robert; did Christ “turn the other cheek” when the crowd tried to throw Him off of the cliff? Why did He “pass through them” instead of suffering at their hands? Also, during His trial, did Christ turn the other cheek to the man who struck Him when he asked why did he do such a thing since Christ had done nothing to him? I suggest you research the true meaning behind turning the other cheek. It isn’t about being a pacifist to another’s unjust aggression.

So if someone attacks your kids you should just let them  ?
I actually once knew a guy who did believe such a thing. Of course, it is ok for the police to come and stop someone from doing violence but not for him since he was a “Christian.” Talk about deluded.
