10% Tithing

I was raised in a fundamentalist church where if you didn’t tithe 10 % according to the Law of Moses you would be “cursed with a curse,” a misinterpretation of Mal 3:9-10. Of course, 10 % had to be given to the church, because they knew best how to use your money. Anything above and beyond was just icing on the cake. It wasn’t until recently while talking to a protestant friend about her pastor requiring 10 % that I looked into it further. Thanks to the wise men and women here at CA that pointed me in the right direction I discovered the truth.
Don’t you think the ot provides a lot of pretty good guide lines? Like the 10 commandments? Which do you scrap and which do you not…Roanoker
I agree 100% with Carol Ann.

Compulsory giving a.k.a. tithing is unscriptural under the New Covenant. Under the New Covenant Christians are commanded to give from the heart.

*Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. *(2 Cor 9:7)

There are over 600 laws in the first five books of the Bible. Do you follow all of those too? As Christians we are to follow the Ten Commandments because we are directed to under the New Covenant.

To the OP, you are not obligated to give a set percentage. Give what you can at this time, be it one dollar or one thousand dollars. It could even be a few hours of your time if that is all you have to give. When the time comes that you are in a better place financially, give what you feel in your heart is right and rejoice that you are able to do so.
I agree. Not giving what you can reasonabley afford is wrong. But comparing what you give to what others give is wrong, too. Actually, I think you’re supposed to give and not brag about it. There’s something about that in the Bible, I beleive. 🙂

Anyone who is here bragging about what they’re giving, hoping to look better than the next, hoping that he will be looke up to, has already got his reward.

That’s not the spirit of giving I think God had intended.
I was thinking the same thing.

Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. (Matt 6:1)

Why do you assume I am well off? 10% is 10%, rich or poor. Its what is due to God. Period. Roanoker
I’m a farmer/rancher… if I gave 10% of my gross, my family would be sleeping with the cows… 90% of my gross goes back out as expenses to make that gross. So if I gross 200,000 but it cost me 180,000 to make that, you say I should then give 20,000 to the church… where does that leave my family? Like someone said 10% to some people is nothing, 10% to others is everything. I give what money I feel I can and I give as much time as I feel I can, hopefully both will continue to grow.

I would think if God intended 10% tithing to be a commandment, then there would be 11
Actually, there are 613 Commandments, but that’s another thread. Neither the magesterium of the Church nor the New Testament require tithing…but it’s a good place to start. Tithing is part of the mosaic law which is not applied to Christians.

Isn’t it a challenge for everyone of us on this tithing question. You see, God never want our money (coz our money belongs to him actually) is a test whether would you give despite your difficulties, although he won’t mind if you don’t. But would it make God happy even if he didn’t ask for it, you do it automatically!!! This shows that you really don’t care about it how little is left to you. Once you really give despite of anything…you will slowly experience blessing from him…coz he won’t let his creation starve and rot…
So why worry how little you have left after you tithe ??

I totally agree with you. With that said I believe that God wants me to make sure that my basic needs are met first A roof over my head clothes on my back food in the frig and all that those things lead to such as utility bills transportation to and from work etc… From the remaining we give other wise we put ourself in the risk of needing the help that we are trying to support. Charity begins in the home and the first thing you can do is make sure that no one else has to take care of you and yours, but that you are doing that. Then you give to take care of those that can not make the ends meet.

As I get older i am able to give more ( a bigger percentage ) each year. Does that mean that i am a better person now that I give more? NO, It means that I took care of what needed to be taken care of gave what I could and God has been blessing me so as over time I can give more. I am not now, nor will I more than likely ever be the biggest contributor in my parish. I do not know who give what nor do I care.

I have heard that the Streets of heaven are paved with gold and that may be true, but the road to get there is dirt and grave. The streets to hell are paved with gold. Al that to to say If you have been blessed with the ability to give give 10, 15, 20% or more and not but a burden on your family or others that you are wise to give all that you can, but it is at your discretion. If you can only give 1, 2, or 3 % your blessing from God will be just as fruitful as if more because you give from your heart and not your wallet. And always remember when giving let not your right hand know what your left is doing.
