100 - Reasons to be Catholic

I’m a PK (preacher’s kid) who converted to Catholicism for many reasons. I’m glad I found this forum! I wanted my 100th post to be special, and so I thought I’d list 10 reasons that I’m Catholic and see if I could get 9 other apologists to list their 10 reasons? This will really help me lead my family and friends to the fullness of the faith (of which, my sister is in RCIA and my dad went to a benefit breakfast for our Twinning Community this morning!)

OK - Here are my Top 10:
  1. The Eucharist - John, chapter 6
  2. Jesus founded the Church on The Rock, St. Peter.
  3. Mass every day (no need for anymore revivals, because there’s nothing to “revive”)
  4. The Mass
  5. Holy Days
  6. Mary and the Saints
  7. Heaven, in the light of purgatory, venial sins, mortal sins.
  8. Fatih and Tradition
  9. The “other books of the Bible”, Sirach, Wisdom, etc.
  10. 1.2 billion members, the family of God, practicing the fullness of the faith in union with Rome.

1 - The Real Presence should be number one on all lists
2 - More to know, more to learn, more to be awestruck by
3 - No fear of dying
4 - Always knowing that God is God, not me and not my theology
5 - Suffering is truly redemptive in Catholicism
6 - I am being fed better here than anywhere, and better than I could even imagine.
7 - God’s mercy seems more evident to me in Catholocism
8 - It is the hardest thing to do…stay Catholic. If it was easy, it could not be worth much.
9 - The lives of the Saints
10 - The endurance of the Church and of the Truth… has to be the hand of God.

😃 Thank you very much. I am also in RCIA and am going through the “is this right for me” phase. I spent the first 16 years of my life Luthern and the second 16 years as an evangelical and now I’m 32 and went to my first mass at Easter and fell in love with the Catholic church and have been going ever since. It is hard though because all of the evangelical teaching which was so against the Catholic Church. I belive the Catholic Church is the One True Church though so I am following my heart. Keep me in your prayers!

16 years huh?

I think I understand… My first 16 were in the Catholic Church… next 16 outside all Churches … third 16 avoiding the Catholic Church, last 12 (and counting) as a revert. For how ever many 16’s God gives me, I am grateful. So I will pray for you (you pray for me too).

23- Our Mother - Virgin Mary
24- Communion of Saints
25- Sacraments
26- Priesthood and Nunhood
27- Pro life
28- Unity
29- having favorite Saints to pray for their intercession - St. Paul, St. Faustina, St. Teresa Little Flower, St. Jude, St. Rita, Blessed Mother Terresa of Calcuta, My Guardian Angel, St Michael The Archangel.
30- I love my parish - Saint William Church of Round Rock, TX 🙂
 
We’ll all be doubling up so I will add one especially for November:

Purgatory

  2. The Communion of Saints (Especially Mother Mary)
  3. The depth of its theology.
  4. The depth of Catholic History.
  5. The emphasis on family life.
  6. The lifestyle…as opposed to just a ‘religion’
  7. The Pope
  8. The Churches
  9. The rosary

All of the above for me. But my number one is.
  1. This is the one (and only) true Church founded by Jesus.
 
hmmm, most of mine have already been listend, but I’ll put a couple that come to mind
  1. confession (it’s so great to get all that stuff off my chest! you know someone once said that if all people had to go to confession, all mental health professionals would be out of business)
  2. the madgisterium (SP?) it’s so great not having to figure out if the bible means this or that, 'cause Jesus gave the Keys to Peter, so if we trust the Church, we can’t go wrong.
  3. the security and comfort that goes with #2. my hubby is protestant and he’s always trying to figure stuff out and I dont need to 🙂
all the othe reasons listed above are fabulus too, esp The Eucharist, Adoration, The Saints, the rosery…

OH just thought of 2 more!
  1. I LOVE the way we catholics celebrate Christmas and Easter. Lent and Advent are GREAT. so guess that’s 4&5
and 6. I love the devine mercy chaplet. esp when it’s sung in the presance of the Blessed Sacrament!
 
  1. Relics. Heads, hearts, hands, bones…it’s all fair game. Where else would anyone take a dead guy’s heart on tour?
  2. Holy cards. Much cooler than baseball cards, and all of us are eligible to get our own (irrespective of physical coordination) – all it takes is holiness.
  3. Gregorian chant. 'Nuf said.
  4. All the pope’s hats. Camauros, Saturnos, Tiaras, Miters – they’re all good!
  5. We have a patron saint of computers, a patron saint of bell makers, a patron saint for mental disease – how cool it that?!?
  6. Theosis. Could it get any better?
  7. The Shroud of Turin.
  8. Marian Apparitions. Good to see ya’, mom!
  9. If I go to a different country and the priest doesn’t understand my confession because of a language problem, I can be absolved anyway because Jesus heard it. 👍 Of course, penance might still be a problem…
  10. Indulgences – much better than your typical expiation of temporal consequence due to sin! Good bye, Purgatory, hello plenary indulgence!

  1. A list of saints that is ever-growing. Mystics, teachers, theologians, stigmatics, victim souls, poor unlearned, Kings and Queens of royal houses – someone for everyone!
  2. Universal appeal. It’s not a national church, race, ethnic group, personality cult, local sect – but open to all, and appealing to every human being to join. Rich or poor, intelligent or uneducated.
  3. History. The succesion of Popes to St. Peter. Unbroken history from the apostles to today.
  4. The endless number of good works the Church has done for 2000 years.
  5. Literary and theological minds – St. Thomas Aquinas, Chesterton, Newman, Augustine, Bellarmine, St. Catherine, St. Teresa – the Doctors and Fathers of the Church, all speaking of Christ in his Holy Catholic Church!
  6. Saints day processions and blessings, small rituals (Ashes, St. Blase blessing of throats, house blessings, Holy Water, blessing of candles … too much to mention!)
  7. Catholic art work and architecture. Chartres, Notre Dame, St. Peter’s, St. Patrick’s in NY – something in every country.
  8. The missionaries who spread the faith across the globe. Our own missionaries of North America. St. Francis Xavier going to Japan and China. The conversion of Mexico – non-stop evangelistic activity.
  9. The Holy Bible – the Sacred Word, given and entrusted to the Catholic Church to teach and proclaim and protect from false interpretations!!
  10. Pope Benedict. He is a miracle.
  11. Our women religious Sisters and orders (the good ones) – there is nothing like them in the world. These holy women are a spiritual powerhouse in prayer and offering themselves to God. Not to mention the endless good works they do for the poor and sick.
  12. Much more.
