1000 year reign

I have been having some good dialogue with some others on another forum about the 1000 year reign, it has been fun. I have been motivated to do a little project concerning the topic. I have begun the project, but there will be much more to come. As of right now I have organized a verse by verse commentary of Rev. 20:1-9 according to St. Augustine found in his writing The City of God. His work is a little scattered but I have made it reader friendly by lining up his comments with the order of the Scripture. Here some translated it as pair of scales.

In the other five times that it appears in the N. T. it is translated yoke.

What is your judgment?

Also, if it is yoke, how is this tied to Jesus’ yoke that is easy?

First of all, yoke would not fit the context because Rev. 6:5-6 are talking about prices, measurements, and so on. And that would cause a disconnect between verses 5 and 6.

ZUGOS (masc.) or ZUGON (neut.) are used in the sense of “balance” or “scales,” both literally and metaphorically, many times in the Greek Septuagint (Lev 19.35; Ps 61.10; Prov 11.1; 16.11; 20.23; Job 6.2; 31.6; Sir 21.25; 28.25; 42.4; Hos 12.8; Amos 8.5; Mic 6.11; Is 40.12, 15; 46.6; Jer 39.10; Ezek 5.1; 45.10).

Since ZUGOS and ZUGON ordinarily indicate something that “pairs,” it is a natural extension of the word to indicate the beam of a balance “pairing” two pans or trays, and then the whole scale as a unit.

Here are comments from the Fathers:

Oecumenius- The scales are the symbol of equity and righteousness. The scales are the symbol of the righteous judgment of the Lord on our behalf.

**Nicolas of Lyra-**That is, divine justice, which he pursued in the surge; for he proceeded out of the ordination of divine justice. The Roman army partly killed and partly captured the Jews, in punishment for the death of Christ, just as was clearly predicted in Lk. 19:43: “Indeed the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you…” Nevertheless, this was not the intention of Titus and his army, who came against the Jews for another reason, namely, their rebellion against Roman rule as is clear from Josephus in the book of The Wars of the Jews. Therefore, it is said that he was holding the scales in his hand and not in his mind. The work of divine justice was executed in this way, by the hand the work is understood, because thus it is effected.

St. Caesarius of Arles- In the black horse we recognize an evil people that works in performance with the Devil. “He had a balance in his hand,” which indicates that while evil persons pretend to have the balance of justice, they deceive many.

**St. Victorinus- **Moreover, the balance in the hand is the examining scales, wherein He might show forth the merits of every individual.

**St. Andrew- **The “balance” is he who tests those who wither by inconstancy of the mind or by vainglory have fallen from the faith through weakness of the body.
