If this story is even partially true, it’s absolutely horrifying.
Transubstantiation is a HUGE stone in the foundation of the TRUE CHRISTIAN FAITH. To deny transubstantiation is nothing short of a heresy. I can appreciate the efforts to unite Catholics and Protestants, but the Catholic Church has done MORE than its share, and met Protestantism MORE than half way when it completely gutted the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and concocted the (valid Mass) Novus Ordo. We ALREADY have an ‘ecumenical mass’. The vast majority of practicing Catholics attend it every Sunday. If that couldn’t appease Protestants, then nothing will.
If this so-called “ecumenical mass” is real and comes to fruition, it will do nothing to further unite Christianity. The Catholic Church ever increasingly panders to non-Catholics and even non-believers. Sugarcoating Christ’s teachings, and watering down Christian TRUTH.
I’ve read the Bible. I’ve read the Church Fathers.
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. ~ John 6:53-56.
No symbolism there.
The more we shed our Catholic teachings and Faith, the more our numbers drop. We need to become MORE Catholic and less of what the rest of the world wants us to be. Did Jesus ever once backtrack and change His Holy Teaching when people didn’t like it? Did Jesus come to give us God’s Word or did He come to make us feel good? The world applauds our “new liberal and more pastoral” approach, but I don’t see it translating into more fannies in the pews. I go to Mass every single Sunday. I don’t see people flocking to the Church because of it’s new gentle, subtle, and touchy-feely approach. I only see fewer and fewer people. We are trampling on the Truth of our Faith in a blind attempt to sell it to people who do not want it. We can lead them to the Truth, but they must accept it in their hearts. The Truth can’t be changed to appease the masses.
At some point we need to shake the dust from our feet (Matthew 10:14) and move on.
Christ have mercy on us all.
