Ok, I want to say that this Netflix series could have been a lot better. However, I wanted to get a feel for how Internet bullying is done–the stuff on SnapChat, Instagram and texting, all of which I don’t allow my son to have access to (thankfully, he is not interested) and social media I don’t use. Also, I seem to be pretty naive and trusting, so I watched it for its educational value, especially since my son is going to high school next year.

I could now understand how much harm social media can cause. I do think I was naive when I read stories about social media bullying. Seeing this series sadly brought the message home in a way that really moved and scared me. I pray for this generation of young men and women who are growing up in an increasingly secular world. More than ever I feel I need to pray and serve the Church as a positive role model, which means I need to keep closer to the Sacraments.

Thank you for reading this post. God bless!

I remember reading hate comments about me on Facebook when I was a young teen. It honestly ruined any ounce of confidence I had and I started to entertain dark thoughts seriously then.

Glad something good came out of the show for you. Social Media can be such a curse for teenagers.

I think I started watching it after the post here about an Instagram picture. I have had friends tall me about it, but I am not into social media. I don’t subscribe because, as DH has said, don’t post anything on the Internet you don’t want the whole world to know.

Teenagers always have and always will do foolish things, have stupid opinions and make mistakes but the problem with social media and mobile phone cameras means these same things can end up being publicly and (what seems like) permanently recorded. I really feel for teens having to negotiate that, it was bad enough in my day when it was just MSN chats and cameras on phones were more basic.

I’m 49, so we didn’t have cell phones or that stuff in HS. My son is very naive socially. He cannot pick up on social ques because he has Aspergers Syndrome. Lots of therapy has allow it to fade over the years, but he still is naive. Honestly, I can’t imagine some of the stuff I’m reading, but I’m sure it’s true.

My youngest brother will be entering high school next fall as well. I like to use social media to share religious articles, news and photos and to keep in touch with friends and family spread around the country, but I really don’t post as much personal stuff as I used to. I do worry about my brother sometimes though. My best friend in high school was bullied, sent nasty comments and texts via Facebook and cellphone. Kids can be so mean. 😦

I’ve read the book 13 Reasons Why, but I don’t think I’ll be watching the show. I’m glad you got something from it though!
