14 y/o discerning vocation

My 14 y/o DS has been considering the priesthood as a vocation for about 2 years now. He says “No, I can’t do that.” Then says “Maybe I can.”

Tonight, while sitting in the urgent care waiting room (he was injured a school but nothing serious), he told me he wanted to be a priest but wants to work as a military Chaplian. He said he wondered how all those soldiers in Iraq were able to recevie the Blessed Sacrament, got to Confession or even receive Last Rites when necessary. He is in the ROTC as a freshman in HS and loves the uniformity of military life. He gets it from my dad. He is constantly practicing his marching for drill team (almost to the point it drives me crazy).

Please pray for him as he is going to approach our priest this week with his goal. Pray for him as we travel down this road of discernment. He is going to go to the Holy Hour for Vocations with me 12/1 offered by our Bishop. He is fascinated by Padre Pio. Could he have picked a better example?? 😃

could he have picked better parents? thank you for encouraging and supporting him, a few more parents like you and we might see the end of the vocations crisis.
 
Lucky guy - he seems to know already what God is calling him to do 🙂

I’ll be sure to pray for him, but do not forget those who really don’t “know” yet - myself included 😃

I will keep him in my prayers. But I heard Bishop Burbidge will not be at this one. 😦

Does he go to Cary High? I was in the ROTC there. The Colonel who runs the unit there is awesome.
 
Nope he attends Nothern High in Durham, my alma mater.

I was not aware the Bishop might not be there. I will have to check the diocese website.

A few years ago, I would have thought it odd for someone to have a calling at so young an age.

However, my brother-in-law, who married my wife and me 🙂 , knew he wanted to be a priest from age 8.

It sounds like your son is a very positive example of what the youth of today can be, if they follow God. I hope God continues to bestow many blessings on you and your family.

Years ago, there were minor seminaries where boys could go to school, in a seminary environment, and discern. There are still some around today, but not nearly as many. Too bad . . . I wonder how many vocations have been lost in regular high schools. —KCT
