The beautiful Feast of our Lady is coming this Friday on 15 August.

I’d like to hear about some of the customs observed, prayers, pious practices, and the like other Eastern Christians have for this time.

This is definitely an icon that is very emotional for me. See Christ holding the soul of the Theotokos as a little child wrapped in swaddling clothes the same way she once held Him. It brings a tear to my eye.

Yours in Christ
Joe

Vespers with Litya Thursday evening followed by a blessing of flowers; Matins and a special Akathist in honor of the Dormition on Friday morning followed by Liturgy and another blessing of flowers for those unable to come for Vespers.

In some of our UGCC parishes the practice of the burial procession is taken in monasteries and is being restored even to parish usage: saintgeorgepittsburgh.org/dormition.htm
This is more common in Melkite parishes, as I recall.

We do a blessing of flowers and herbs after the Great Vespers, which start in about an hour…

and then again in the morning after the Liturgy.

A blessed end to the Dormition Fast to everyone and Happy Feast.

salaam.

We only started the Dormition fast yesterday—being on the Julian calendar. 🙂

I thought the OCA was now officially on the New Calendar now (aka Revised Julian).

Happy Feast of the Dormition (to everyone who is celebrating it today)!

🙂

I am new to this site. Can you just pass some more information so that I can understand better?

**Forgive me, but I don’t quite understand what it is that you’re not understanding.

Could you ask in more detail about what you’d like to know?**

Not all OCA parishes have adopted the revised Julian.

I remember when there were attempts to make everyone go on the RJ calendar in 1981. Abp. Dmitri (as he is now) was against forcing this, even though most of the Diocese of the South was on it.
