I could be wrong in my opinion, but here’s all I can really think of to bring to this discussion.
-I wouldn’t really be surprised if these tortures happened, simply because a man who remained peaceful towards His persecutors was tortured brutally as told in Scripture: He was scourged, blinded and beaten, crowned with thorns, had to carry His own Cross and was beaten each time He fell on the way, was stripped of His clothes (which, if you’ve ever peeled off a shirt from your back dried of sweat I can only tell you it hurts, imagine what it felt like to Him), He had nails put through his hands and feet, and then on top of all those there was the verbal ridicule. I wouldn’t be so shocked if the soldiers got annoyed at Jesus not cursing at them and such, and trying to get a reaction. Just a thought. Yanking at His beard would have been nothing, for example. Stomping on His chest when He was yet to be raised on the Cross would have been nothing, either. They may have just taken whatever they could find to hurt Him with. (“Hey guess what! I just found a whole bunch of nails!”) People are cruel, the people who tortured Him could have been in the business for a very long time and were pretty messed up and even enjoyed it. With no one to stop them, they could have been having a hay-day.
-Wasn’t there a point in Scripture where there were people who tried to throw Jesus off a cliff, but He got away without much trouble? I could be wrong, but I think I read that in Scripture. If there was a crowd trying to throw Him off a cliff and He escaped without trying hard, I think He could have survived the tortures. He also fasted for forty days (which I could be wrong, but I would think that would be near impossible if it weren’t for the Grace of God). He could have taken Himself off the Cross had He wanted to, which is pretty amazing. If all this was possible, I think He could have prolonged His life despite the harsh treatment.
Again, I’m not pretending to know everything, I just want an answer to this as well and want to try to help. God bless y’all and Ave Maria!
