Thank you for posting that, Barb.
I had heard of St. Dymphna, yet knew little about her.

It was the closing two paragraphs, of the article, that riveted my attention.
That the people of Gheel would reach out to those who needed the companionship,
and the daily structure, that family life so often provides - so that those who
are recovering have a place to go where they are both welcomed and understood.

Luke 9:58

“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests - but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”

I will definitely be offering a prayer to her tomorrow. For personal reasons, I also consider her to be a patron of rape and incest survivors, of childhood sexual abuse.

Hi Reen…must admit I read the same para’s some time ago with a sense of awe at the people of Gheel! The transition from a psyche ward back into the general community can be an extremely difficult one and quite a few indeed find they cannot negotiate it and return to the ward. I don’t think the situation here in Sth. Aust. currently anyway would allow such a vision to be realistic - not where a family situation is concerned.

There is a real need (one that to my knowledge anyway as yet not fulfilled and certainly not in Sth Aust here) to create a place of transition between ward and community…this could also be theraputic if a person is struggling in the community with another hospitalization threatening. It just may enable stabilization and avoid hospitalization. The challenge would be to create an atmosphere that is totally not reminiscent of any sort of hospital and focused on transitioning into the community or stabilization to transfer back into the community.
All that we do have here in South Australia between community and the hospital, while they have started out with great aims, rather rapidly have become too much like being in hospital for patients to be drawn to them, and utilize them, as a point of real assistance and theraputic value connected to adjustment to community living/stabilization. The experience of mine here in Sth. Aust. is that soon their high aims are abandoned in order to justify (including budgetwise) their existence by the number of their membership, which they strive to retain…rather than striving to facilitate membership to live and function and with personal reward to the sufferer in the general community and as a contributing member of value. This is also reflective of the poor insight of administration monitoring these places, who do ask them to justify their existence - but it seems not by the number of membership who have left to return to the general community and have done so successfully.

Hi Muzhik…I can only image and with real horror the type of mental and emotional suffering of rape and incest survivors and also of childhood abuse - St. Dymphna would be a great patron and advocate and many great blessings have been attributed to her intercession in connection with mental and/or emotional suffering as well as suffering a mental illness per se. To my knowledge she has not been included on the regular Calendar of The Church, but her feastday remains 15th. May. Devotion to her is considerable.

Thank you so much for posting about St. Dymphna and her feast day!! I love St. Dymphna and ask for her prayers all the time because I care for a loved one with a serious mental illness. I wear her medal 24/7 because she is the patroness of the mentally ill and also of their caregivers.

Muzhik, according to this site called Patron Saints Index: saints.sqpn.com/saintd01.htm St. Dymphna is also the patroness of incest victims and rape victims.

St. Dymphna, please pray for us! 🙂
 
She is also the patron of sleepwalkers. I have recently begun asking her intercession for my husband. Thanks so much for the reminder of her day.
