Of course he’s not becoming a priest at 17 - he’s a seventeen year-old who plans to begin studying for the priesthood. Canon Law does not permit men to be admitted to the presbyterate until they are 25 (or 23 years old for the deaconate) - Can. 1031.1. The bishop and vocation directors will determine his maturity and suitablity for beginning studies.

It seems to me that he is quite mature and he seems to know what he wants. I hope he isn’t as much dedicated to becoming a priest as he is about doing the will of God. Submission to the will of God is the surest guarantee that we will not go wrong. He is obviously very dedicated to serving the Lord and His Church, so God-willing he will have the chance to serve the Church in the priesthood.

I was rather curious about one thing though - he genuflected before the altar several times during the video, but as far as I can see, the Blessed Sacrament is reserved on a side altar. While his reverence is laudable, a profound bow would be the most appropriate manner in which to reverence the altar…

I will remember him and all those discerning a vocation to priesthood or religious life in my prayers.

This thread title is misleading.

The 17 year old is entering formation for the priesthood.

He will still have to complete 4 years of college, maybe in a minor seminary, and earn a bachelors degree, then he will enter a major seminary and work on the Masters of Divinity degree which is another 4 years. His diocese may also have a pastoral year in the mix so at the least he is 8 years, maybe 9 years, from entering the priesthood.

:Ah, unintentionally misleading, I’m sorry. I was just trying to be succint.

Any mods want to change it to “17 year old boy ON THE WAY to becoming a priest”, go ahead.🙂

I hope you all anjoy the vid.🙂

What is so amusing is that when I was in school, the typical age to enter formation/discernment was 14 - and I’m not that old. Boys who thought they had a vocation went to junior seminaries instead of regular high schools. One of my 8th grade class mates did. The high school years included some early work in theology and philosophy (all Catholic high schools used to teach those subjects) but were mostly for discernment. If, at the end of high school, a true vocation was believed to exist, college choices were made with that goal in mind. Some young men went to colleges that were part of a seminary; others went to “regular” colleges but with a course of study geared toward a clerical future.

For the boy in the video, canon law sets a minimum age for ordination at 25, I believe. So, he has at least 8 years to go. Pray for him. 👍

I entered a minor Seminary at the age of 14 along wth 59 other 14 year olds. i dont see why this boy is considered to be newsworthy?

He sounds like he’ll be a wonderful priest. Thanks for posting this.

I don’t like to burst people’s bubble. But I always feel the need to remind those who read these vocation posts to remember that when someone says that they are going to become a priest, brother, sister, nun or some other form of religious life, this is really their wish. Whether it happens is up to the Church.

We should always be happy that the young are considering entering the priesthood, the religious life or both. But we must be careful not to assume that because we like what we see or hear is a guarantee of a call. Even to say that there is a 17-year old boy who is going to be a priest is misleading. He may be entering a seminary or a religious community. That’s what we have to say.

We should always pray that such men and women will find God’s will for their lives. It may be the priesthood or religious life, but it may be something else too. Sometimes I find that many holy spouses and parents trained in novitiates and seminaries. God does not just use them for training clerics or religious. When I was a novice we were 36. Twenty-three made it to solemn vows. The other 13 are wonderful husbands and dads. Their homes are very Catholic and faithful to the Church.

Let us always encourage those who are listening to be quiet and know that the Lord will guide them. Let us not build up their hopes or deflate them either. Both are wrong. Let us encourage obedience to God’s plan. Those who obey God’s plan for their lives love and serve him more faithfully.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
