Thank you all for your advice and replies. I won’t interfere. He is going there rtoday after class to see if he can squeeze a few more hours in while he looks for another job-- that’s what he wants to do…he has some bills that have to be paid…

But what is truly bugging me is that companies are so careful these days not to get sued for things that are clearly not right–disordered lifestyles and so on. So they are very care ful how they deal with people like that because of backlash from powerful groups.

But for a legitimate thing like a small injury on a young person- the innocent get stepped on.
It teaches young people starting out to be cynical. I was careful with talking to him about this and just told him they are not giving you enough hours so look for something else. I told him it was not very nice how they are treating you after you got hurt there, and most companies don’t do that.

I also told him I will be getting my hot beverages elsewhere- forever- because of this.
Keep in mind too that this isn’t “the company” doing this to your son. This is one manager.

He may be poorly trained himself, or he may just be a jerk. I’ve watched a lot of retail and fast food managers unable to handle customer service or employee issues. A lot of them are young themselves.

So if your son talks to his manager earnestly, without assuming bad motives, perhaps he can work out the situation amicably.

Of course you shouldn’t talk to your son’s manager for him! I doubt the guy would talk to you anyway. Managers don’t have to talk to their employees mommies! When I was a shift leader at Taco Bell, I was frequently called from the line to answer the phone, only to find it was a certain employee’s mother wanting to let me know that it wasn’t her son’s fault he was late or to ask if he wanted her to bring up his extra uniform pants or even to seek feedback on how he was doing at his job because he stayed up too late playing video games and she told him he was going to be too tired to work. (Sorry lady! Taco Bell doesn’t have parent-manager conferences!) Finally, I told her that this was a place of business and not a baby gym and to quit disrupting our dinner rush with her nonsense. She came up and tried to get into an argument with my manager and he ended up firing the kid.
I was not going to argue-not my style. I was thinking in terms of advocating for someone who was vulerable because of lack of ife experience. I would be happy to help anyone who is vulerable, and i do. This is not performance based or about making excuses for my son.

I could have also just showed up and asked where my son was-and taken it from there.
I am pretty skilled at handling people in a nice way, and even so- that would make them think–

It is not about the hours, it is not about schedules. It is that they are taking advantage of laws that are in place to protect honest working people–and that includes all adults, even young ones. But they know its not a big deal for most kids and get away with it.

If this was a bigger deal-such as someone stealing the identity of a young adult-or using their charge cards or doing something else illegal against them—the argument of-he’s an adult-let him handle it, kind of loses its logic.

This also was illegal-and in broad terms the same thing. Because it is a minor job, not such a big issue. But the core issue remains.

You shouldn’t interfere with the manager, but you could help your son to understand his options so he can decide what to do.

.
If your son was dealing with this sort of situation, he would still have to deal with it himself. You could advise him about how to file a report or assist him in obtaining an attorney, but it would have to be his signature on the complaint. (The attorney would probably be fine with your credit card though.)

No it doesn’t. In the cases you cited he is still an adult and it is still his responsibility to handle it. Mommy does not call the credit bureau, the credit card company, the bank, etc., You have no legal standing and attempting to handle things for your 19 year old son is doing him a big disservice.

Giving advice yes, getting in the middle of it, no way,
This also was illegal-and in broad terms the same thing.
you keep saying that, but you have no evidence of illegality.

Before acting on what you have been told by your son regarding the incident, it is worth contemplating if there might be more to this story. It does sound rather odd.

Ok. I want you to remember you posted this on the boards and it is up for examination and opinion… This might sting a little but remember we all like and respect you.😉 Well most of us do, I know I do…

Your position of a grown man is concerning. You are crippling him. I know that to you he will always be a baby and someone who’s mom is always on his side but your REALLY need to sit back on the sidelines more. That you even CONSIDERED going in there shows that you have some serious impulses that need to stop. At 19 my wife got married. At 19 I was away at school. He is a man. He needs to handle his own stuff. Mommy going in there would so emasculate and embarrass him you would do so much damage to his future I can’t even tell you.
I will also say this, a great employee that excels in his job does not get benched without reason. It could be his injury is an incident in a long line of issues at work. That he can’t assert himself in this situation for some strait answers shows a lack of leadership and responsibility. I gather this is a part time coffee house job while he goes to school. It really is not that big of a deal. Soon, he will have to deal with bigger career issues. You have elevated your initial concern to now throwing around the term illegal! You have no idea the facts from the employers perspective. To be honest, they can leave anyone off the schedule they choose and it usually isn’t the best employees.

I expect he should get out in front of this and find other employment. Because his future employment in this company looks bleak. And perhaps if you feel you need to scratch your mommy itch, you could help him by teaching him how to be a better employee and communicator and someone who can solve these things by himself. That is not saying that the company is right and he is wrong, but rather putting the issue of the injury aside and focusing on bettering things from your end.

Also, it might not hurt for both of you to become more acquainted with work injury rules and why certain hospital questions and bills are covered and to what point that serves because it sounds like there is much confusion from your end.

As for never getting your coffee there again, I actually agree with you. I would never patronize a place I thought wronged my kid… Just on principle…😉

But you really need to get this is check. The age he is at right now… it is so important he learn to fly on his own. Your impulse to help will not only harm his future career but also marriage and children of his in the future. What you described is the blueprint for either making it tough for him to get married and stay married or for him to let you have a relationship with your future DIL and grandkids. I’ve seen it all over the world, and these very boards. Please check yourself before you wreck yourself!

.
Funny-you all sound like my husband. He told our son shake it off and find a new job.
😊

Yes. Use it as a teaching moment, but is his thing to figure out on his own, no matter where it ends up.

Also, how do you think they would treat your son even if they did keep him on?

He should stamp the dust from his sandals and move on.

I knew you didn’t mean it that way, but words have meanings.

If I were 19 I’d want mom to handle this, but I think he ought to be the one to do so, for many reasons.
Mom should give her 19-year-old Good Orderly Direction regarding this situation, but in no way, shape or form should she “handle it” for her adult son.
