1953 St Joseph Missal

I’ve been going to the TLM in my area for awhile now and wanted to get a missal to use. I notice at one site I can get the 1953 St Joseph one for far cheaper than the 1962 ones from Baronius and Angelus. Is there a lot of difference ? I understand there might be a problem during Holy Week but for most Sundays would this missal be all right? Thanks in advance

Yes, it should be fine. The differences between the two are very few and far between (its mainly the addition of St Joseph to the Canon and few minor rubrics here and there) and, with the exception of Holy Week (which you already know about anyway), one wouldn’t much notice them.
 
Yes, Malphono, is correct. Most folks can’t hardly tell the difference anyway. There are just a few changes and these probably won’t be evident to you for a few years. Once you can almost recite the Mass from memory then you start to notice little things.

For example; at our Good Friday service I was expecting the “modified” prayers for the Jews to be said but it wasn’t. The old prayer was used. Not a big deal. But I noticed.
 
I like my 1962 from Angelus because it is good for daily Masses, funerals, and it also has the Latin-English and some extra private prayers for before communion. I also have a 1953 St. Joseph Sunday Missal that I don’t carry to church. It is an edition in English only. But it works fine. I’ll bet that is what you are talking about. If I forget my missal, I duck into the library and borrow one of the '53’s in there. There are maybe three of them in our library at church and they are all English only too. For most Sundays it works fine. Palm Sunday would probably be hard to be in the same place for the long Gospel without the Latin.

I am surprised about the Good Friday prayer. Are you speaking of the one modified most recently by Pope Benedict? Where you usually assist they didn’t use the new prayer? We had the new prayer I am sure. I was following closely in my 1962 and Father read something else. Of course no one publishes a new missal to add a once a year prayer,
 
Is there latin with this missal or is it all english? I prefer to have latin side by side with the english so I know where I am. Thanks
 
Just a nostalgic reminiscence - can anyone remember the “My Sunday Missal” put together by Fr Stedman? I had one in the late 1940’s. If I recall, there was a strong emphasis on the “Dialogue Mass” where the congregation spoke the words that everyone used to think belonged to the acolyte, or server, who of course was speaking the words that really belonged to the congregation! 🙂
 
I got my St Joseph Missal when I was in the 7th grade in 1947, it works just fine
 
Mine is a 1953 - Passion Sunday is the only day it wasn’t exact, but our Priests did the readings in English for that Mass anyway.

yes, I just double checked it. I have a copy of the missalette they used here at the house. I was able to follow the Mass verbatum using this missalette. I was sort of stunned but there it was.

Perhaps whoever put together the booklet “dropped the ball”. I usually go up to Seattle for FSSP. Our Good Frdiay service was magnificent. I’m making the entire Triduum next year at North American Martyr’s. I was an emotional basket case for two days afterward. Such beauty!!!
 
I have the 1943 Novena Manual by Father Stedman and use it daily.
 
i have a 1962 daily missal… i went to a latin mass on pentacost sunday and was lost, not because the prayers were diffrent, but because i have no idea how to use the missal :banghead:, if any of yall could PM me and give me instruction i would greatly appreciate it!😃
