I’m going to an EF Mass tomorrow afternoon and just got out my Daily Missal to mark the pages etc. and noticed that the copyright date is 1960…I seem to vaguely remember that changes were made to the Mass in 1962 and that the EF Mass is celebrated according to the 1962 Missal, but I have no idea what those changes were, so will I still be able to follow the Mass with the older Missal?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you’ll be able to use it.

You can follow the Mass with even a 1945 missal. All the texts are there- the only differences are mainly in which texts are to be said. In addition, missals before 1956 have a different Holy Week.

If the calendar in your missal ranks feasts as “First Class”, “Second Class” and "Third Class"m then it is a 1962 missal. If it ranks them as “double” and “simple” then it’s an earlier version incorporating the rubrical changes of 1956 including the Holy Week. That’s practically identical anyways.

What your missal will not have is the name of St. Jospeh in the Canon. You can pencil it in if you want. In the Communicantes, after “Genetricis Dei et Domini nostri Jesu Christi” (Mother of our God and Lord Jesus Christ] you can add “sed et beati Ioseph, eiusdem Virginis Sponsi” [but/as also blessed Joseph, spouse of the same Virgin]

Thank you very much. I got this Missal in a box of assorted religious books at a tag sale (the entire box was $5 and there were 25-30 books in the box) but haven’t had the opportunity to make much use of it. It’s in pretty poor condition, a couple of the pages in the center where the Consecration is are coming out, but I couldn’t throw it away as it is obviously well-used and prayed into. this will be the 3rd time I have attended an EF Mass, the first two being indult Masses (one High Mass and one Low Mass) at St. Boniface in Pittsburgh.
