1962 Baronius vs. 1962 Angelus Missal

I’ve heard a great deal of good things about these two missals, but I’m wondering if anyone could elaborate on their differences and which they like better? I know that Angelus Press is SSPX, and the Baronius Missal is by FSSP, I know that the Baronius has a nicer leather cover, and I know that both contain all of the Gallican prefaces used only in France. The Baronius apparently also doesn’t contain the 7 sacraments, except for matrimony, but does include the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, which Angelus doesn’t. Baronius has 6 ribbons, Angelus has 5.

Is there really much difference between the two? Which would you pick? I’m looking for a beautiful, devotional, keepsake reference.

Not much difference really. I have both. I still prefer the old standby St. Josephs Daily Missal, not the continuous. While not as extensive as the others it is good enough and simple enough that most can use it very easily. Besides that they are a lot cheaper. You can almost always find original versions in thrift stores, used book stores or swap meets for less than $10.00. You can also buy a new re=print copy of the earlier versions at many Catholic book stores for around 25 -30 dollars.

If you are looking for a really good orthodox missal though, you’ve got to go qo with the '45 St Andrews:thumbsup: 👍

It is outstanding in just about every area.

I should probably add to the end of the above sentence “…that could be used currently at an indult mass”. Although I’ve never been to one and there aren’t any locally, I’d like it to be current.

Both the Baronius and Angelus Missals are very similar and if I remember correctly the both of them are based on the same source. Generally I would say that the Baronius one should be more up-to-date. And well the indult is for 1962, not before that. There have been changes in 1945 and 1956. As a devotional, those are fine but if you want to follow the indult then 1962 would be an easier missal to follow.
 
The St. Andrews Missal, while appealing because of its commentaries and devotional prayers, sadly contains more typos than any other generally available Tridentine Missal. Sentences, on both the English and Latin sides, are corrupted or missing. Some days have the entirely wrong readings, and/or wrong scriptural citations (e.g.: “Luke 4. 1-11” when it should be “John 2. 1-3”)

No missal, not even the two new ones, are free from errors yet. However, the Baronius people are about to start work on a second edition of their missal designed to eliminate many of the typos. Don’t expect that for several years, however.

My vote goes toward any missal based on the Marian Missal, as the errors are few, and the translations are poetic. Both the Baronius and Angelus have roots in the Marian Missal. For an indult Mass, I’d go with Baronius, simply to support a publisher who is trying to do the right thing.
 
I have the Baronius Edition of the 1962 Missal.
It is beautiful - one problem, the type is very small and some people (like my sister) might have a hard time reading it because of the small type.

I also have a 1953 St. Joseph’s Daily Latin-English missal, and I love it, too.

And of course, my Vatican II Daily and Sunday Missals which I bought from the Daughters of St. Paul, are quite nice (New Mass).

Could you be more specific on the errors? I know that the '45 St Andrews has some differences, primarily due to the Holy Week revisions of the 50’s and a few others due to the movement and or suppression of certain Feast Days. I’ve never run into any problem with it during normal masses however.

The Marian Missals are very good aso. I have several of them.

One of my hobbies is colloecting old Missals. I have a good size collection, including some of the ones used Post Vatican II and pre Novus Ordo implementation.
 
The bookstore at my former FSSP parish sold both the Baronius and the Angelus Press missals, so I was able to compare them side by side. I ended up purchasing the Angelus missal, as I found the type larger and easier to read. There was also just a little extra “something” about the missal that I found more appealing. My husband ended up choosing the Angelus missal, also.

The faux leather cover on the Angelus missal doesn’t bother me at all - it’s still beautiful.

You won’t go wrong no matter what you end up purchasing, but I love my Angelus Press missal.
 
The Angelus Press is the printing arm for the SSPX so I’d go with the Baronius press one because I’d never give money to anyone in bed with the SSPX when Baronius was a perfect alternative.

Well, I have an Angelus Press missal that I take to an indult TLM. It is a very good missal. The St Joseph’s I had from my grandmother was falling apart, so when I went online this seemed like the best alternative. It was listed on the St John Cantius (Chicago) indult site, so I assumed it must be OK. I only found out about the Baronius after I had purchased the Angelus. Still, I have no regrets about the purchase.

Other threads lost in the crash have debated the merits of purchasing from the publishing arm of the SSPX. Some of the arguments for the purchase that I have accepted include 1) There is nothing schismatic in the missal. 2) It seems futile to try to prevent every penny of your money from indirectly going to benefit someone that you may have a moral disagreement with. 3) Why deprive yourself of a very good product after recent statements by Cardinal Castrillion et.al. on the status of the SSPX.

Everything you say is perfectly true. But… the Baronius is so close in quality and content to the Angelus, that about the only thing that DOES differentiate them is their publishers (well, that and the font size). With almost all else being equal, I’d probably throw my support behind the non-controversial FSSP and support their product. I have no beef with the Angelus missal though.
 
I wish I knew about the Baronius Missal before I ordered the Angelus one. I’m still with the Roman church and attend a Mass celebrated by an FSSP but didn’t see the Baronius there.

In fact one of the people I see at Mass every Sunday said he like the Angelus Missal better than the ones he has because of the Latin being on the page on the left and the English on the right.

I decided I liked that format the best and ordered it from Angelus.🤷
