1962 Breviarum Romanum

I have managed to acquire a reprint of the Dessain 2-vol. 1962 Breviarum Romanum. Naturally it is all in Latin, and my Latin is not the best.

I am looking for any material online that would help me “drive” this Breviary. I am familiar with the modern Liturgy of the Hours, in its english form of the “Divine Office”. At the same time I have access to a reprint of the “Anglican Breviary” which seems to be the 1911 Breviary in elizabethan English. I could rely on that as a yardstick, but I gather the Breviary was simplified between 1911 and 1962, and am also conscious that the “Anglican Breviary” may have certain Book of Common Prayer influences (that presumably might extend to the rubrics too?).

Do any readers have any good internet resources they could recommend?

I already have the rubrics of the Breviary and the Missal in one volume (the purple book), but was putting off reading it, as I thought I might find something easier online.

Yes… a bit late :o because my own PC is down so I had to hunt throguh my past emails for someone else I sent the attachment to. .
 
Baronius Press is coming out with a Latin-English 1962 Roman Breviary sometime this year.
 
There is a great resource reprinted through Lulu Publishers, called “Learning the New Breviary” by Fr. Bernard Hausmann, S.J.

It is up to date for the 1962 breviary.

Is the Dessain Breviarum reprint still under production?

I have a poorly bound reprint from Preserving Catholic Publications that is beginning to fall apart.

Actually, the Dessain Breviarium is the one being distributed by PCP. I believe the project was spearheaded by the U.S. SSPX.
I assume they did it to quickly fullfill the “emergency demand” knowing that a superior edition is forthcoming. The fourthcoming edition is being prepared in Econe, Switzerland. They have been working on it for few years, so I’m assuming it will be fully re-typeset. Again, this is an assumption. It is supposed to a very high quality edition from what I have heard. It is due out in September of this year, although I would not count on it. The release date has already been postponed a few times.

That’s where I got mine, but it’s not that poorly bound.

Actually, there is a Decree from the Bp. of Scranston inside about the FSSP, so I would’ve thought they were instrumental in getting the reprint.

Will this be in English too, like the Baronius one?

It was the FSSP who reprinted it in 1995. The current reprint is just a facsmilie of the 1995 edition. (which, of course, was originally printed in 1961) I believe the FSSP was approached to do this recent reprint, but they denied. I’m guessing because they are somewhat tied in with Baronius Press and awaiting their new edition.

The Econe breviary will be a 2 volume, Latin only edition (at least that was what I was told 2 years ago)

I forgot to mention that Rome is reprinting a 1962 Breviary (Latin only) totum edition. I don’t know if it will use the Vulgate Psalter or the Pius XII. I found it here- liturgia.it/lit_lev.html

It said on that webpage before (for some reason it is not there now) that they will be reprinting one edition per year, to be released in September. So it may be a couple of years before it comes out. Unless maybe they pick up the pace a bit and get it released sooner, to meet the demand.

So the breviaries sold by PCP are the FSSP’s?

Is there any information online about the Econe edition online?

Where did you get the rubrics of the Breviary and the Missal? I’m looking for those.
 
eddie2- The PCP Breviary is a facsimile reprint of the Breviary that the FSSP reprinted in 1995. Again, according to my sources, the FSSP was not involved in the 2007 reprint.

To my knowledge, there isn’t any information about the “Econe Breviary” online or elsewhere. Everything I have heard about has been by word of mouth. I’m thinking they will probably do it the way breviaries of the 60’s were done, with flexible leather covers, red or gold page edges, marker ribbons, etc… (I hope) From what I hear, it is supposed to be very high quality edition.

Where can I buy an actual Breviary? I have a feeling it’s quite expensive. I know my school library has a copy of the Liber Usualis, which is nice to read, but you are not allowed to check it out. I think that’s like $180, so I imagine a nice Breviary is quite expensive as well.

They say “out of stock”, but email them and ask when it’ll be back in. I did that and was told that they actually had 5 in stock! 👍
