1962 Missal Sales in Italy rise!

Rome, Apr. 4, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Italian media outlets are once again reporting that a papal document liberalizing the use of the Mass of St. Pius V could be released during the Easter season.
Reports of the imminent release of a motu proprio allowing all Catholic priests to use the Tridentine rite have been circulating in Rome for a full year. The rumors have intensified recently, however, and this week saw the Vatican Secretary of State confirm that the document is close to publication. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone told the French publication Le Figaro that the Pope is prepared to take action soon-- although he did not give a date. In expectation of the motu proprio, Catholic bookstores in Rome have begun selling copies of the 1962 Missal. Expecting brisk sales, publishing houses in Italy are reprinting the old Missal.

We don’t know if the motu proprio is a fact, but we do know there is severe resistance to anything pre-Vatican II.

Personally, I thought that Ecclesia Dei was enough. Apparently that drifted off into the wrong direction, with the emphasis on schisms, disobedience and other unpleasantries. We hope that will change soon.
 
Bob, I agree with you.

I would be thrilled if the MP materialized, and TLM’s started popping up all over the place. However, I am more guarded about my hopes nowadays. I’m finding that I should not set myself up for disappointment.
 
One has to wonder why the sales increase. I still have my own 1962 St. Joseph Missal as does my wife, her siblings, and my siblings in addition to having our parents’ Missals. I simply can’t believe that the Italians threw their old Missals out any more than we did. Those old Missals are out there…stached away in drawers and closets.

It has been said that younger Catholics are very interested in the Latin Mass. My guess is that most young Catholics don’t have a 1962 Missal, so they would have to buy them. I’m excited!

I wonder when this would take affect… the same day the papal document is released, or weeks/months later?
 
Have you asked your parents and grandparents? I grew up in the 50s and I have my mother’s. DW has her parent’s and grand parents.

My grandparents are Baptists and my mother is non-denominational. So I could ask, but I don’t think they would have one :p.
 
Are we talking about hand missals or the all-Latin Altar Missals?

I’d be more impressed if it’s the all-Latin Altar Missals that are selling well. Because we know who’s likely to be buying those. The ones who might actually use an Altar Missal. On an altar. Someday. When a certain document that may or may not exist is released.
 
I’ll be coming into the church this Saturday, so I don’t know about any of this, but is it neccessary, to attend a Tridentine Mass, to have your own Missal? Will Missals not be provided in the pew?

My Grandpa still has his I think, but it’s very, very old and almost falling apart (It was a pocket missal for when he was in the Navy, so it’s got a lot of wear on it). He showed it to me when I was just starting RCIA. I could probably use it, but I’d rather not have to ask.

I’ve seen videos of the Latin Mass, but to actually see it would be really interesting!

Not necessary to have your own handmissal. In fact, many don’t have a missal at all. Don’t let that stop you from attending.

Some TLM provide the red (Latin-English) missalettes for you to follow the common of the Mass, which should help you. However, to get the full benefit of participating in the Mass, you’d be best served by investing in a handmissal with the correct readings for the day.

And don’t worry about sitting or standing. Just follow the congregation. They can’t be all wrong. 🙂

Hopefully the MP’ll be released. Also I wouldn’t mind a 1962 missal so long as it wasn’t by Angelus press 😉

My family goes back quite aways. Nobody in my family has theirs. All of them are gone.My mother was convinced that the TLM was going to be part of history. I am sure I will think a similar thing when it comes time to toss the Oregon Catholic Press.

I am anxious for my diocese…if this Moto comes about I will be keeping a close eye to see if a TLM pops up in my diocese. I hope it does happen
