Ugh, well I wouldn’t want to be kneeling in Mass jealous of someone else’s missal LoL $40-50 is a lot but I just got a 10% raise recently for no longer paying tithing to the Mormon church so I feel a little more latitude. Until I start paying that to various other deserving Catholic organizations.

The Roman Missal already has been updated. The Mass has also been updated. The Mass couldn’t be updated without the Missal being updated because the Missal is the book the priest or bishop reads from when he celebrates Mass.

If you mean handmissals, yes, those have been updated as well.

Sweet. Thank you. I was wanting to purchase a handmissal was well. It’s a bit of coin to come up with, so I wanted to make sure that mine was “up to date”😃

What update is this and when did this happen? I bought mine around 2009, hope I don’t need a new one…

Hey, no worries. You just gave me a scare (thought I was going to have to drop another $50 bucks). Anyway, you should check out the Traditional Latin Mass sometime if you have one in your area.

Does prospective mean you’re currently protestant?

Well if you’re going to go all the way to KS City, you may as well head an extra couple hours north and visit our FSSP parish in Omaha 🙂

I have them both. The Angelus is my go-to TLM missal.

Larger print and paper color are easier on the eyes.

Superior layout makes for less page turning.

Overall, it just prays better.

I’m just getting into the Tridentine Mass and trying to learn as much as I can, so forgive me if this is a little off topic.

In reading about the old forms of the Missal I see dates like 1962 and 1945. I was wondering if these are just different publishing dates or if there is different material covered in each one. If it’s the latter, does anyone know of any changes to the Mass pre Vatican II? And for that matter any changes in the previous few centuries.

You don’t really have to worry about it for the Ordinary of the Mass. Which is pretty much unchanged. In fact the only major change I’m aware of is Saint Joseph was added to the Canon by Bl. Pope John XXIII.

It’s a bit different with the Propers and calendar though. With the Mass you wouldn’t notice very much except for a few Feasts and the Holy Triduum. Post-1955 Missals should be very easy to use. Pre-1955 will likewise be fine for most of the year.

The Divine Office is more complicated :p.
 
My 1962 version is the Summorum Pontificum one by Baronius Press. I also take it with me to Adoration, Confession, and to read prayers even before OF Masses. I did take my father’s First Communion Sunday Missal to my first ever Latin Mass I attended that is from the early 1950’s, and the priest looked at it then told me which Sunday they were on - the readings language was a bit different but otherwise most everything was the same.

The “Tridentine Mass” was mandated in 1570. From then until 1962 there were several editions of the Missal and complementary liturgical books. So the last edition of the “Tridentine” Missal was released in 1962. This Missal did differ a small bit from the Missals going back to 1570, but not by much. In fact, 99% of the changes were very small rubrical changes that only the priest had any clue about. So if you attended a Mass in 1960 it would look exactly the same (except a very small difference) from one in 1963.

The only change that has been made since 1962 to the “Tridentine” Missal was that Pope Benedict somewhat revised a prayer for the Jews in 2008. So for clarity’s sake it is probably best to buy a brand new hand missal with the updates. But if you have one from 1945 or whatever it will work perfectly fine.
